stretch and sweep

I'm 38 weeks today and at my appointment my dr said if I wanted she could give me a stretch and sweep and I said no cause I've heard they hurt and I'm a sook.

has any one had one and what are they like?

Re: stretch and sweep

  • There are several threads about this, but if your doctor does it right out should hurt a bit.

  • I had one done last week at 39 weeks. I was hoping I wouldn't have one ever because I had read so many horror stories, but while checking my cervix my OB just said, "I'm going to go ahead and sweep your membranes to see if we can get things moving." And before I knew it she was done. Easy peasy. Didn't feel any different than the check itself really. Although, it didn't do much for me yet. Still pregnant today at 39w6d. Hoping for a baby soon! Best of luck. I will say if your cervical checks have been painful or unbearable I might steer away from the stretch and sweep, but if they've been just mildly uncomfortable I'd say go for it! If you're already dilated a few cm you may have better luck than I did, and I don't think it can hurt anything. :)

my dr doesn't do cervix checks so I have no idea what to even expect but thank you! I'll definitely mentally prepare myself for my next weeks appointment and suck it up and get it done
  • If you're ready to move things along it's definitely worth a try. Also, just as reassurance given you've never had one, the cervical checks aren't anywhere near what I was expecting. There's definitely some pressure and can be a little uncomfortable depending on where your cervix is (mine is far back), but it certainly isn't painful or anything terrible in my opinion. A little discomfort maybe but nothing crazy. :) Good luck!
  • Just had mine done and I would say it was intense. You can definitely get through the 30 seconds but it is not easy at all. I was sweating and could barely breathe and it did hurt, but it's worth it and is over quick. Maybe my dr. was more aggressive. Lol fingers crossed it did something. I have cramps now so we'll see.
  • I have mine tomorrow, how long do they usually take or does it vary?

A her age provedure takes about 2 hours. Lol. Just joking. About 1 minute.
It's uncomfortable and if ur chicken like me, those in the wait room will know. Lol.
I'm having mine done tomorrow too.
    Here's to hoping this works.
    Good luck mama.
  • good luck! keep updated how it goes and if it does work :)
