TTC After a Loss

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss & Fertility Testing

I'm 26 and I've had 2 painful miscarriages in the past 1 year that my husband and I have been TTC. I met with my doctor to discuss what I can do to increase my chances. She didn't offer any advice, She was cold and not reassuring. She ordered a bunch of blood tests for me to see if I have any autoimmune disorders. I'm due back in 8 weeks for another series of blood tests. I plan on going through with these blood tests.

However.. she's also referring me to a radiologist for imaging of my uterus and some other test called a Hysterosonogram... I'm a little lost on all of this and debating whether I'll actually go through with it. Has anyone ever done these before? Did it provide answers for you? Was it worth it? I'm not even sure my insurance will cover it. I have no one else to turn to about this so any feedback on here would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

Re: Recurrent Pregnancy Loss & Fertility Testing

  • Hi. I am 27 and have had two miscarriages 6 months apart this year. I just went through all this testing. I had a blood tests to check my AMH, clotting disorders, autoimmune disorders, markers for PCOS and I had a saline infused sonogram. I also was skeptical about getting the uterine imaging but I am so glad I did it bexauae it revealed I have a congenital defect called a septate uterus that is most likely causing my losses.

I'm so sorry that your doctor has not been supportive. That's awful.

Feel free to PM me anytime.

  • I have no advice except that if you find your doctor to be cold and not reassuring you might want to find another one. My OB was amazing after my loss - really kind, went out of her way to make me feel better, called to check up on me and told me next time around she'd see me as much as I want to ease my fears.

  • I know this has already been said, but my OB was also kind and reassuring.  Find a new OB for sure.
  • Yeah I don't plan on seeing her again but unfortunately this is one of the only offices that accepts my insurance so my alternative options are slim.

  • Ugh. I had a doctor like that through my first two losses and it was horrible. I can't even tell you what a difference having a compassionate doctor has made, even though I still have had more losses. If you can find someone else that will take your insurance, you should. I had the imaging done (they just called it a 3D ultrasound but I imagine they're looking for the septum in both cases). Mine didn't show anything, but if you do have a septum (I think that's the right word? Lol) you'll want to know about it. Best to rule out every option. We did do that test last though, after we got all the blood results back. Best of luck, I'm glad your doctor is at least testing you. My first doctor refused to run any tests until I had 3 miscarriages.

  • Is your doctor an RE or an OB? After a year you could see an RE if you aren't already.

  • Wow @winnie1122 .... I thought the standard was 2. 3 is too late in my opinion.
  • @mrsmommya three was the standard for a long time but more providers are starting to begin after 2. I was surprised when my dr said we could start testing after my second.

  • @winnie1122 I'm going to search for a new doctor, I need someone compassionate. I will wait for my blood tests to come back and pursue the imaging afterwards to figure out if I have a septum. Thanks for the input!

@AL_TwinCities My doctor is an OB. My insurance refuses to cover visits to an RE. :(

  • I received my blood test results this week and everything came back normal! My doctor told me there were no increased risk factors for recurrent miscarriage, at least as far as my blood is concerned. This news has given me a boost of confidence to try for a couple more months before considering further testing. If we're still unsuccessful in a couple months, I'll fork over the cash for more tests.

  • Just to share my experience - I've had three mc's. My first two were around 6-7 weeks and I believed they were random flukes. I already had 2 children at the time so I didn't push for testing until my most recent loss in July at 14 weeks. I went through all the extensive testing, even chromosome testing for me and DH and every single test came back normal. Even though the tests didn't show anything I felt I had to do it all to be sure. If there was something I could do to prevent another mc I had to know.

    Wishing you the best.

  • I had 2 miscarriages in the past year of TTC as well. My OB has ordered blood tests for next month so that we can rule out some of the potential issues. I am hopeful for a clean bill of health like you! I hope this testing and the results have given you some peace of mind and that you get your BFP soon! Best of luck!
