January 2016 Moms

Omg it's 10 months not 9 months...

I'm a little slow - 40 weeks divided by 4 weeks per month is 10 months!!!!!! Why do they say 9 months?

28 weeks this week....3 months to go....heard they are the hardest and longest!

Re: Omg it's 10 months not 9 months...

  • Yup. Well the first 2 weeks, we are not actually pregnant (since they count from the first day of your last period). so it's more like 38 weeks....

My mom used to say to us that she carried me and my triplet sisters for 10 months and kept us in as long as she could to make sure we were healthy. I used to think she was crazy when I was in middle school haha! I told her that we learned in school that you're pregnant for 9 months . She said.. I carried your two older sisters and you triplet girls.. . I of all people would know that it's 10 months!

  • I agree that's it's 9 months, but because the way the weeks are, it's just tricky with all the debates about when the 3rd trimester actually starts! Since my due date (1/9) was 3 months from yesterday, I'm gonna go with that and celebrate being in the 3rd trimester!
  • Ya I did a count and it's 9 calendar months ish. Conceived mid April, birth in January. My count gives me 9 months. But yea it is 10 4 week months. My mum always stressed that with my cousins and everyone that had babies before me so when she mentioned it to me I wasn't too crushed lol

  • Yes it's about 9.1 months if you do the math correctly. Like indibidule explains.
  • Ugh, this crap makes my head HURT, and I like math lol. Like pp said before, I think with holidays and such it will fly by.
  • I'm a nurse and before I became a nurse I was planning on becoming an OBGYN. It's 10 months. 4 weeks in a month. If you say 4 weeks to a doctor, they will tell you a month.
  • Can we just use weeks? When someone looks at me weird I say a little over halfway there (I'm 25 + 4). I seriously keep track of the weeks so it's easiest for me. They can do the math lol

Oh lord, are you serious? I conceived May 8th - my baby is due January 29th. Look at a calendar - it's 9 months!

  • What about saying its 10 lunar months and 9 calander months and agreeing to disagree ;)

  • There are 52 weeks in a year, and 12 months.  52/12 = 4.3 weeks, on average, per month

    9 months x 4.3 weeks = 38.7 weeks

Gestational time is based off of 40 weeks from your last menstrual period.  Ovulation rarely happens at the same time as your period, so generally speaking, you aren't actually pregnant for the first couple of weeks.  This means that the length of time from conception to your 40 week mark is actually closer to 38 weeks of gestation, which is right around nine months.
  • What does it matter? It's not like it pushes your due date back at all if you believe it is 10 months vs 9. Still pregnant the same amount of time.
