Possible benefits to induction

I will be almost 1.5 weeks over due on Tuesday and Dr wants to induce tues am. I do not have Hugh blood pressure, I am a healthy weight, baby is moving and not too large or under stress. I went for a non stress test and baby was ok. Everything I have read online about induction has been because of risk of the above symptoms which I have none. I am just not wanting to force my body to do something jt really doesn't want to do yet. Can anyone say if they had an induction because of just being overdue and if it wasn't that bad?

Re: Possible benefits to induction

  • My doctor has told me that she doesn't like to let her patients go too far past their due date because the placenta starts to break down. Every doctor is different and will have their own reasons.

  • My office policy is if you want to wait, they do nst/ultrasound to check baby, cord, and placenta. If all is well you can go the next week and repeat. Induction is scheduled for 42 weeks at the latest due to placenta issues/still birth risk. I have to have this convo Tues and schedule the testing if baby isn't here. I had the first nst with my first but she came on her own at 9 days late.... I would ask your Dr if you can go later and get their reasoning/induction policy....

  • I have also heard it's common for most doctors to not let you go past 42 weeks. Baby's heartbeat will start to slow as they run out of room and placenta starts to deteriorate. In RARE cases, leaving a baby in too long has cause babies to pass away in the womb. This happened to someone I know; still a mystery but it does happen and was linked to the baby possibly running out of resourses in the womb. I would trust your doctor! Good luck!
  • Another big risk of letting the baby stay in is the risk of the baby passing its meconium (first poop).  My doctor had brought this up as their reasoning of not letting you go past 41.  As much as I absolutely do not want to be induced, based on personal experience I would much rather be induced than have that happen.  My aunt went to 43 weeks with my cousin.  She just didn't want to intervene.  My cousin ended up passing her meconium in the womb and aspirated it.  Because of this, she has cerebral palsy, extremely limited brain functioning, cannot speak, etc.  It is just not worth it to risk this happening, in my opinion.  I am very much wanting as little intervention as possible, but sometimes an intervention can save a baby's life or make it more of a life worth living.

  • For what it's worth I went naturally to exactly 42 weeks without problems. This was with frequent NST and the agreement that the placenta and everything looked ok. Had I of not gone at week 42 they were wanting to talk induction within a few days of that. Find out what your doctor is comfortable with. There are more natural ways to start labor at that point. For me they were going to break my water to get things going. But water broke on it's own! lol
  • I would listen to your doctor:) My doctor likes to get thing started on a normal pregnancy at 41 weeks (not on a weekend, she will do it Friday or Monday then so plus or minus a day or two) because it can still take a day to have your little one. Same reasons stated above. If you have GD and are diet controlled 40+2 is her max, medicine controlled in the 39th week.
  • Whew! Thank you ladies. You all just helped make MY decision easier! We are set to induce in the 19th, but I was thinking about waiting until the 22nd and I would just about be 42 weeks. Reading all of this makes me feel better about inducing on the 19th. Hopefully he will stop being a stinker and come on his own.
  • My doctors will induce me at 40w and a few days so that I'll be delivered by 41w. I think it just depends on your doctor's philosophy and everything. I'd go with what they say! Best of luck

My due date was 10/10 & I'm scheduled to be induced at 41 weeks-10/17. Baby is fine, it's their policy to not let you go past 41 weeks. I'm ok with this, though hoping she comes before then.
  • I was due 10/5 and I'm having my non stress test tomorrow on the 12th.  If everything looks okay, DH and I are thinking we'll induce on the 14th (we kind of want to skip the 13th). My OB is very pro-induction so I know she'll be on board with this.
  • I was due 10/1 and was induced around 1 am that morning. I delivered on 10/2 at 00:01 after 23 hours of labor and 2.5 hours of pushing.
