Supplemental maternity insurance

I am in a bit of a bind, I need to find additional health insurance to cover my labor and delivery costs. My current health insurance through my employer is not very good and since I'm due Feb 20, 2016 my deductible and out of pocket expenses start over Jan 1, 2016. Everything I have paid out of pocket for in 2015 does not roll over to 2016

Re: Supplemental maternity insurance

  • Are you 100% sure they start over? Many have a 4th quarter carryover. So whatever is done from October through Dec 31 will count towards your deductible in the first quarter of the new year.

  • I wish that was true when I had major medical issues. Would have saved me nearly 5,000 a few years back. :( OP, hopefully you can figure things out. I would inquire to your insurance what PP said. Does not hurt to try.
I had to call my healthcare company directly because HR left that part out when I asked.

  • Most insurance companies do not roll over anymore. Your deductible starts over Jan 1 if your plan goes by calendar year. I am an agent. I've never heard of maternity supplemental insurance. All insurance policies cover labor and delivery. But you do have to pay your deductible and out of pocket. You can try picking up an individual plan instead of the employer sponsored plan but they all now have a minimum $3250 out of pocket. All plans cover relatively the same thing, just depends what the out of pocket costs were picked by your employer. It's not like one will cover csection and another won't.

I guess I'm lucky because mine does.

  • I've looked into it and buying an independent plan doesn't seem to pencil out, at least for me. The extra premiums will exceed my max out of pocket on my current plan so I would actually lose money over the course of a year. If I were you I would contact the hospital and ask about payment plans, they are usually pretty good about it. My hospital also has an early payment discount, so if you can find a good deal on a introductory offer credit card and put it on that then you can take advantage of the discount and pay it off before the offer expires, usually 3-6 months.

The only other options I know of for maternity insurance are policies like short term disability or hospital insurance, each of which must be taken out prior to becoming pregnant in order to qualify.
  • Yes you are lucky. Most don't roll over anymore. Sign of the changing times of the market.
