Sick and daycare???

LO caught a bug this weekend and has been sick. It sucks!!! I have been burning my measley few days left to take care of her and have been in and out of the doctor's with her, poor little thing! I am keeping her home from daycare because I think it's the right thing to do.

Well now the doctor says she can go back to daycare (they actually said she could have gone back today but I am being careful). She has no fever but still a bad sounding cough and is fussy, but the doctor says she's no longer contagious and can go back. She can go back per daycare policy too. The doctor says having the cough persist for even a week would be totally normal at this point.

Well so I feel awful and guilty to send her back with a cough and being fussy but I obviously can't take a week off work if I want to still have a job! This is my first baby so I don't know what people usually do or how to handle it. I also can't predict how many times she will get sick so I may really need my days saved....and I just got back from maternity leave like 2 weeks ago so timing is awful!

What to do??? Anyone with a little one in daycare know what people usually do?

  • My LO has a cold. I sent her to daycare, because staying home won't make her get better any faster! And I figured she'd at least be distracted from feeling crappy at daycare :)
  • She's going back to daycare tomorrow. That's where she got this from so...

  • LO had a cold that lasted every bit of 2 weeks. Maybe more. I am a bad mom and lost count! But my point is heck yes she went to daycare. I wouldn't feel badly sending her - they know what to do and will take good care of her!
  • Thanks everyone! Back she goes, I am stressed about it but I figure that's because it's my first and it's the first time she's been sick.
  • Starting to rethink this since LO got croup at daycare X(

Forgive me because I don't know anything about the croup except that it is a cough. But, like, does it come along as a result of something else? Like my mom had the flu and it developed into pneumonia. Or do you just straight up get the croup? As if my mom went from zero to pneumonia? I feel like my knowledge of childhood illnesses and care is woefully inadequate. I've been lucky he hasn't gotten sick so far (knock on wood)

  • Most likely your LO got it from daycare, and it def won't be the last so you can't stay home every time LO is sick... you just have to listen to your peds and keep home when contagious.. However, when my LO gets sick for the first time I won't be able to leave him, sick babies need their mamas... It's just one of those sucky situations :( Hopefully your LO feels better soon
  • ^^ I Totally agree, I would have to stay home too. I'm scared knowing there will be times I have to send him when he's not 100% and that breaks my heart.. Trying not to think about it... I'm sorry she's so sick and praying for a speedy recovery for you guys
  • Here's a little info on croup:

Croup is a respiratory condition that is usually triggered by an acute viral infection of the upper airway. The infection leads to swelling inside the throat, which interferes with normal breathing and produces the classical symptoms of a "barking" cough, stridor, and hoarseness. It may produce mild, moderate, or severe symptoms, which often worsen at night. It is often treated with a single dose of oral steroids; occasionally inhaled epinephrine is used in more severe cases. Hospitalization is rarely required.

DS is prone to it and has be hospitalized twice because of it. My pediatrician gave us a script for the steroids so we can administer it as soon as we hear the barking cough and hopefully avoid the ER and an over night stay. Kids eventually grow out of it. Thank god!
  • I had had an issue on Friday. My son goes to a home daycare with just one other baby during the day and then a 3 year old half a day on Fridays. I am actually friendly with the 3 year olds mom as we have friends in common and have been to some family stuff together. On Thursday night she posted on Facebook " this hyouse can't seem to get rid of the stomache bug. We have got puke again tom ---- ( the 3 year old). Oh and --- sick too ( the older daughter). Better this week then next week ( they are going to Disney)." So one would think the 3 year old would stay home on Friday. Nope. I get to daycare and the provider was getting out toys for her. Mom called and asked if she could go full day instead of half day. And the mom said that the girl threw up the night before but it was because it was something she ate. I was furious for the mom to do that. Her daughter was not well enough to go to preschool but she can send her to daycare with two infants? I felt bad for the provider because she is friends with the mom so she didn't know what to do since the mom said it was due to something she ate. It was a horrible situation to be in. I said something to the mom when she got there and we did not leave on good terms. And I felt so horrible leaving my baby there. My assistant called out of work already and I'm at a new job do I felt I could not not go in. Am I wrong for being so pissed? Thank goodness my son did not get sick.
  • ^^ You are not wrong, I'd be pissed too. She deserves to be called out on that situation.

@dancegurl1118 My older son had croup several times and all the old ladies in the neighborhood said to bundle him up and rock him outside in the cold air. I finally tried it in desperation and it helped his breathing so much. You probably know more medically to know that perhaps its not a good idea so feel free to ignore me. It did really work for us.

  • @henrytviii nope! Steam showers and out in the cold work well! They both help the constriction in the throat.

  • Any daycare; home, church, or business should be run on the 24 hour rule. Can't come back until 24 hours after sickness is clear (fever, diarrhea, vomitting). It SUCKS to stay home an extra day if it's your kid but better than sick kids at daycare.
  • I was gonna say, this 'barking' cough sounds a whole lot like what I sounded like when I was pregnant and sick so very long! I did end up begging the Dr to RX me some cough meds for it. But - it was during the Wisconsin winter, it was cold as hell, and oh yeah I could breathe SO much better outside in the cold ass air. I would send DH to get the car after drs visits (the parking lot was usually an ice rink) and stand outside waiting and breathing deeply - it was fantastic. The parking valets I know thought I was crazy for waiting out there vs inside with them. Thanks to @lovethatcolosun for educating me! I hope your boy is feeling better

@staceyfern I don't use daycare, but I'd be so pissed if that happened to me. Oh hell no. I fully would have said something. I'm glad you did. I get not being able to NOT leave the kid with daycare, she's got to work and has no other option, but just own it. Tell the providor your kid may have a stomach bug, at least so the provider can take precautions.
