ilioinguinal nerve compression

Hi all! Though I've been reading threads in this group since first finding out I was pregnant, I've never actually posted anything. Wondering if anyone else is experiencing ilioinguinal nerve pain. I'm currently 34+2 and the pain started in my lower back around week 27. I'm now mostly feeling the pain in my groin - when standing or walking I'll get a sudden jolt of excruciating pain. This seems to be happening with greater frequency the bigger I get. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? If so what has helped?

Re: ilioinguinal nerve compression

  • Is this a fancy word for lightning crotch? If so... lots of ladies on the board get it.

  • Lightening crotch sounds so much classier! Hahaha. OP the answer is yes, very much so.
  • Hmmmm??? My understanding of lightning crotch was that it is actually felt in your vagina.... This is more of a pain of the nerve that starts in the lower back and wraps around underneath the abdominal muscles and ends in the low groin. The pain I feel in the front is almost in the side of the leg as opposed to a vaginal pain. Is that still lightning crotch? Felt multiple times a day?
  • I have low abdominal pain that is kind of the same thing. Sometimes extends down through groin and is excruciating to move....at. all. I have had a previous c-section though and chalk it up to adhesions. Although ob said there are ligaments there that can stretch and be painful as well. Or baby could just be sitting on nerve.
  • I had this same thing with my first pregnancy. It was so bad it literally stops you in your tracks. It would be right inside my inner thigh and I remember thinking is this labor pain cause it was so bad. Anyway this didn't happen. Until the very end of my last pregnancy like 2 weeks before delivery. I really hope I don't get it this time!!

@Jame414 It just scared me when you said "chalk it up to adhesions ". Are you talking about your placenta adhering to your CS scar? That would have much more serious complications then just pain while pregnant. Sorry if I misunderstood but my placenta overlays my CS scar and it is an issue my dr is watching closely, lucky no adhesions yet for me. If you think you have adhesions your dr should be doing an US to check.

Yes you are correct lighting crotch is in your vagina. A shooting pain up vaginal canal or baby door as most like to call it. I have had plenty of this but not what your describing. Are you on any time of bed rest or limit activity?

It sounds similar to sciatica pain but with a nerve that wraps around the front instead of through the buttocks/thigh.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I didn't have any problem during pregnancy but during labor (pushing part) with my last child it was HORRIBLE! Contractions didn't hurt as bad as my leg hurt. I had my husband massage my leg during the last few minutes of labor to help.
  • I've got pain on the left side of my groin - feels like my left leg is going to go dead on me. It's horrible
