If real labour will baby move during contractions?

Hi ladies! I am 40 + 2 days. So a few times tonight I have woken up with period like pains (front and kind of in the back). After the third time I decided to try to stay up and time them, then after timing two of them the baby started moving. I have always been under the impression that the baby won't move during real labour. Am I wrong? After I felt the baby move I stopped timing because sometimes his movements cause a lot of pressure and I can't tell what is contraction and what is just the baby moving.

Also I am soooo not looking forward to period cramps again. They used to wake me up lots during the middle of the night.... It's been amazing not having them!

  • Baby moves a lot during labor.  They've got to a lot of work to do too in order to make it out!
  • I am a FTM and I think a lot if us have this question! I wish midwives and doctors would teach us the answer without asking! I asked one of my providers and he said yes, baby should still move. Baby should always move every so often. If I time his movements he should move at least six times an hour. From other reading I know that he may spend some time sleeping, so to not freak out if he hasn't moved in a little while. However, if I ever notice lack of movement for longer than he is typically still, I should eat a snack or drink something cold and sweet to get him to move to reassure me. Or sometimes I firmly but gently rub my hands over my abdomen and that prompts him to move. It looks like if contractions are going on and baby moves way less than normal or ESPECIALLY not at all, that you should probably go the the hospital to make sure baby is ok.

My baby moved while I was in labor. She was also Ina bad position and I was dehydrated. Once I got fluids I could feel her move into the right position. I didn't really feel her moving during active labor or while transitioning but I was more focused on breathing through the contractions to tell!
  • After two babies, I was still wondering this! Lol I guess I had forgotten many details. I just had DD3 on Friday and she moved through the whole process. Best of luck!!
  • So glad you asked this because I've been wondering the same thing. It's hard to tell whether he's just putting a lot of pressure or if I'm having a contraction. Sadly all of my contractions so far have been BH. My belly gets super hard and feels like everything moves into the middle and toward the top of my baby bump but I still feel him wiggling and kicking. 39w5d, so hoping baby comes soon!!!!
  • I asked the nurse who runs my NSTs the same exact question. She said yes, the baby should move, but sometimes we won't realize it because the contractions are so strong and painful and our bellies get so hard.
  • Thank you everyone! I woke up after an hour of period cramps and went and bounced on my "birthing" ball and drank a couple glasses of water and the cramps stopped. Then I came
back to bed and the baby was going crazy kicking his little feet into my side. Luckily I still fell asleep for another for 5 hours. Now the cramps have started up again. Hopefully he comes today! (Although it is Canadian thanksgiving this weekend and I am looking forward to some turkey... :P)
  • I felt my baby descend through contractions. Like @ElleMF728 said, the baby has a lot of work to do to make it out!

This was me too! I was sitting up getting my epidural and I told my nurse it hurt worse because he wouldn't stop moving.  Turns out he was descending while I was getting it and he was born less than 15 minutes later.  It was surreal.
  • The same thing is happening tonight and I can't sleep through them at all.  I think this time it may be for real though.  I have had 11 period cramp like contractions within the last hour (have been having them for the last 3-4ish hours but just got the hang of timing them in the last hour) They start in my lower back and then my lower abdomen aches for a bit, my back starts hurting more, I feel nauseous at about the 1 minute mark and they stop between 1 min 15s and 1m 30s.  Just trying to wake up the hubby with my groans but he is sleeping like a log....I wish!
