Scary experience

Yesterday we were at a large mall. Dh and the three older boys were at the Apple Store and I was changing LO in the restroom. All of a sudden the emergency system was activated and we were told the mall had to be evacuated. I quickly finished and started making my way out, it was thick with people and hard to move, busy Comumbus Day shopping weekend. Then I got a phone all from Dh, as people were panicking leaving Apple two of the boys had gotten separated from him and he couldn't find them anywhere. I had LO which made it harder to be quick, but I found a security guard and begged him to tell me what the emergency was. Thankfully some idiot had pulled the fire alarm so there was no danger other than people pushing and shoving each other to get out, so I felt safe keeping LO in the stroller and staying inside to search. I gave him a description of the boys and he called for backup. I took one end of the mall, Dh another. There were multiple exits and parking garages and we didn't know which way the crowds had pushed them as the Apple Store was in the middle. After a very long 20 minutes Dh found them in the parking garage in his half. One of the boys has anxiety and was a sobbing hysterical mess. I felt so bad! Thankfully they had managed to stay together. I don't even know how to guard against something like this happening in the future though. I'm very thankful it wasn't an actual emergency, I can't think of a much worse place to be separated than a large mall in a big city with a million exits!

  • Oh my, how scary!! I'm glad that everyone is safe. Now would probably be a good time to sit them down and create a plan about what to do in an emergency situation like that.

  • That was scary just to read! I'm so glad you are all safe and together. That must have been so stressful. Hugs!
  • Right, but what do you do?? They did what we have drilled into them from a very young age - found a mom with kids and asked for help (first choice police/security guard/someone who works at the place) but there was no cellphone reception where they were at in the garage so even though they knew our numbers they couldn't call us. Designating a meeting place which we normally do when we go someplace wouldn't have worked since we couldn't move freely. Any good ideas for an emergency plan?
