High Risk

Does anyone have a blood clotting disorder or ready know they are high risk? Just thought we could do a weekly check in for high risk mommas. I have Factor V Leiden (heterozygous) and I was put on Heparin just now. I did Lovenox last pregnancy, but it's way too expensive.

You don't have an insurance or obamacare (no idea how it works honestly, I'm Canadian, and assuming you're american) to cover Lovenox, or something similar?
I think if you need to take something because of your disorder, I wouldn't take the risk of not taking it because of cost.

Also,
While I'm not high risk (knock on wood), I've seen high risk check-ins benefit a lot of moms, so keep an eye out and feel free to start them if you wish

Yes, I'm on Heparin now. I can't afford Lovenox due to insurance/deductible, so I decided Heparin would be better. It's quit the savings actually, like $800 less a month.

I haven't read all the pages and didn't know if someone started a high risk weekly check in.

Ahh okay, I'm glad you're taking something.
I Have a friend who just had a baby last month and she was taking heparin for her entire pregnancy - I'm glad you can take something and it's so much cheaper!

No worries! Not that I've seen

It's still really early, I think some mama's on here might be considered high risk right now due to losses, and I think there's also a couple with thyroid problems (though not sure if that will make them high risk).

No blood disorders here, but I was high risk my last pregnancy, and will most likely be again this pregnancy. I had an incompetent cervix and irritable uterus, took daily progesterone, and spent 3 months on bed rest. I went into premature labor at 24 weeks, and then again at 25 weeks. Thankfully, labor was able to be stopped, and I made it to full term. This time around, I'm sure I'll have to go through a lot of ultrasounds and close monitoring. I think a weekly high risk check-in is a great idea!

I'm high risk due to my last 4 miscarriages I also have one mthfr mutation and was put on lovenox 40mg a day. I haven't had any blood issues that we know of its usually a problem when you have two or more mutations but my Dr thinks this may help since I keep loosing my babies so early on.. im also on progesterone 100mg twice a day and i have pcos oh and diabetic ugh... . .I'm praying for my rainbow baby this time!!

I have Prothrombin Gene Mutation (Factor II). I used generic Lovenox my whole first pregnancy & 6w after.

I also have PCOS & 3 m/c since then.

I have the same thing and told both my midwife and the overseeing doctor who did my IUI and whose still doing my first appointment and no one even mentioned putting me on something like that. I am definitely going to need to ask now... I have it but i have never had any symptoms of it, i was just tested cause my dad had it. Maybe thats why? I dont know but i am definitely going to need to ask..... O.O

I don't know for sure yet if I'll be on progesterone shots or not, but likely not. DS was born 5 weeks early due to PPROM from chorioamnioitis. When I talked to my OBGYN about it a year ago, she said that since the cause of the early labor was known and was not something preventable or something likely to happen again, I would not be considered high risk the next time. I'm just waiting for her to confirm that again at the first prenatal appointment.

@nlewis1 yes but there's usually a high risk thread within each BMB. I've found it to be more active & better support.

I've never met anyone else who dealt with this either! FX that neither of us have the same issues this time around.

I am also high risk due to amount of miscarriages and lung and heart issues. I am scared! I have dull cramping every once in awhile during the day. Anyone else have that? I am 4w4d.

I'm high risk and on lovenox 40mg as well. This is my first pregnancy. I have an immune deficiency which includes high clotting risk with it. Fingers crossed for the best. I'd love to do a weekly check in! The high risk board doesn't seem very active.

@tberg854 I've had cramping toothroughout. I'm now 6 weeks and 1 day. Try not to worry. As long as there is no blood everything is ok.

I'm high risk due to my age and I was hospitalized with my first for preeclampsia. I was there for 7 1/2 weeks and my son was 6 weeks early and stayed 3 more weeks for him. So far they are having me take a baby aspirin daily

I have irritable uterus too, I went into labor at 32 weeks and then spent the final 3 weeks in and out of the hospital close to a dozen times to get IV medication. I made it all the way to 39+4! I'm praying it doesn't happen again this time, but we'll see

I was high risk because i have had 8 miscarriages and 2 cervix, 6 surgeries on my uterus and last pregnancy i had accreta. Hopefully i won't be as high risk as last time. I had to go in for an ultrasound every week of my pregnancy last time. Hoping I'll be much less high risk this time

There's now a generic. Obviously I don't know your insurance situation, but I am also high risk for blood clotting issues (no clue why, not Factor V Leiden, had two major clotting incidents though). Back in 2008 when I had my first DVT/PE event Lovenox was $49 a shot (and I took them twice daily!) AFTER insurance. But, sometime since then, I forget when, a generic version (Enoxaparin Sodium) came out. I get it for $10 a month now! 60 shots for $10!!! Crazy sauce. Have you looked into that?

As a side note, I was also high risk with my last pregnancy, so if anyone is new to Lovenox/Heparin and have questions, ask away. I researched a bunch. I also ended up delivering early (as opposed to being induced as was the plan) and having a healthy little girl and a healthy mom!

I like the idea of weekly threads for our BMB.

I just joined this board today. I'm high risk because I have epilepsy. The seizures are controlled and managed with Lamictal (lamotrigine ja the generic) and it has added risk factors for neural tube defects, but I've talked extensively with my neurologist - before starting TTC - and the general consensus for all experts in epilepsy is that the dangers of a seizure for the fetus are way worse than the dangers of the medication. The only way to counter is a lot of folic acid.

I also have one MTHFR mutation so folate was recommend to me instead of folic acid.

To counter both the mutation and the risk from the medication my Doctor gave a prescription for Keplin which is 7.5 mg of L-Methylfolate.

I'm nervous for week 4 and 5 when the neural tube develops. I pray that it closes properly and all that folate daily does its job to counter all those risks.

I am optimistic that I have done my due diligence in terms of talking to doctors well before TTC. So I've been on high dose of folate and prenatals for about a year. And I've been actively communicating with my primary care, Obgyn and neurologist. The rest is no longer up to me. That's probably what's so scary. We do everything right and it doesn't always turn out so.

FX to all the high risk pregnancies here. Let's keep this thread going every week. I think it will be a good source of support.

Wow, that's awesome! I did Enoxparin Sodium last time and it was $1000 out of pocket until I reached my deductible.

I am actually switching insurance come January, so I really hope I can get better coverage on medications.

I was high risk with my DS because of irritable uterus and a dynamic cervix (it kept lengthening and shortening as it saw fit). I went into premature labor at 32 weeks the day after my baby shower, but they were able to stop it with the shots of.. I forget what it was called. They gave me steroid injections for baby's lungs in case he came early and I was out of work on bed rest. I made it to 39 weeks, too! My friend just got diagnosed with irritable uterus also and she is due in November. She's the only other person I know that's had it! I hope we all have nice smooth pregnancies this time!

I'm high risk as well due to being homozygous MTHFR C677 mutation. I have my first ultrasound tomorrow and then will see a high risk doctor. I'm currently taking a prenatal with L-methylfolate as well as a prescription b vitamin combo called Metanx and a baby aspirin daily. Will find out if I need lovenox soon. Feeling good so far though! (Except for the usual first tri symptoms)

I too have MTHFR

I had three miscarriages with my ex and we found out I had MTHFR and he has several chromosome issues. RE said we may have had more miscarriages we never knew about...
Now, remarried, I'm pregnant after years and years on birth control. I'm terrified to say the least to lose another. At 5wks U/S looked okay. We go back tomorrow at 6wks to have another. I'm almost too scared to be excited. Praying for a healthy baby and pregnancy for all of us.

I have had two miscarriages this year. Husband and I went to a specialist in early September and learned that I have a septum in my uterus. Before I could scheduled the surgery to have it removed we found out about our current pregnancy. I'm currently 8weeks 4 days and the baby did not implant on my septum (hooray!) I am still considered high risk because my septum is rather large. We are extremely nervous but still so happy. Sending good vibes to everyone on this board.

I'm high risk for a blood clotting disorder, Factor V Leiden heterozygous. Last pregnancy I had to take 2 Heparin shots each day. I have my first appointments next week, with both the OB and the specialist. The anxiety is very real. Every twinge in my legs makes me panic that I've got a blood clot. Last pregnancy I was on the shots by the beginning of week 8. I'll be 10 weeks before I get a prescription this time around. No matter how hard I try, I can't get my new OB to show any sign of urgency.

pumpkin+tx Are you taking prenatal vitamins? Are you on any L-Methylfolate supplements? If not, you'll want to check with your doctor. I take a special prenatal that does not have folic acid, but l-methylfolate which is the active form of the vitamin that we can actually access and use. Folic acid can actually block the receptors from taking up the good stuff, so I was told to avoid it. I also take Metanx, which as l-methylfolate, and methylated version of B6 and B12. I was also told to take a baby aspirin and DHA. Definitely check with your doctor on these. A regiment such a this could hopefully reduce your risk of blood clot and MS. Good luck!
