Who has had surgery while they were pregnant or personally know someone that has? I am scheduled to see a surgeon this Tuesday to schedule the removal of my gallbladder because of stones. Just looking for some reassurance cause I am so nervous. I am 22 weeks and 2 days pregnant today

    I have only known people who have had to have some sort of oral surgery. So no advice here, but if your Dr knows about it and is comfortable with it I am sure all will be fine. Nervousness is definitely normal! Try not to stress about it, it will just keep you up more than necessary. T's and P's for ya girl that all goes smoothly!

    My sister had her gall bladder removed at about 30weeks pregnant and was super scared but all went well and her dd is now a healthy almost 6 year old

    One of my friends got an emergency apendectomy when she was pregnant. She and baby both turned out fine. I think her recovery was harder than most, and she missed quite a bit of work, but I'm sure she was just happy that baby was ok.

    Lurker from Jan 16 I had problems with gallstones and had a bad attack at like 15 weeks. So far I have been able to control it with diet, but they did say that if they had to remove it they could and it didn't seem to be a huge deal. If you want to lurk the Jan 16 board or search Kidney Stones on that board, I got some responses from when I posted and it seemed pretty common. Good luck mama!

    She was only off work a few days (3-4) and her stomach/incision was sore the remainder of her pregnancy but nothing crazy

    I had my appendix taken out 16 weeks pregnant. Everything was okay. The baby lacked nutrition during my healing, seeing how I couldn't keep anything down except for broths and yogurts. But as soon as I was able to eat normally again, she grew very rapidly. I'm almost 22 weeks now and the baby is still perfectly fine! though, my incision points are quite sore from stretching and healing at the same time. Good luck!

    My incision sites still hurt so bad! Had mine done August 14th. It isn't the cramps that get me, it's the burning from them trying to heal and stretch at once! Ouch!

    I had an emergency appendectomy since there was a stone in my appendix and I couldn't hold anything down. That second day after when I could feel hungry again was AMAZING! My baby did better than I did during the surgery, the second trimester is the safest time to have one. I was on dilaudid for 4 days, I got it every two hours as well as oxy for pain. I also took oxy for almost a month after surgery since my jobs involve so much moving and the pain was killing me. It wouldn't have hurt so much if it wasn't for the fact that I was still sick and working over time. My baby was behind then and she is now ahead of schedule and doing great.


    My mom even had surgery during her third trimester. She had a blood clot with my oldest brother and it started making its way towards her heart so they had to remove it. My brother is fine and made it past his due date. That was her first child too.

    Your doctors wouldn't let you go through with surgery if they didn't think the benefits outweighed the risks. The risks are usually very minor, especially if they're doing it as a laparoscopic procedure. You have no idea how many women have surgery during pregnancy! I was baffled!! Since mine was really early in the morning and I was in the hospital alone and terrified my nurses had some people come in and talk to me who were about to deliver. They had surgeries as well, one at 26 weeks and one at 11, I can't remember for what, but both were fine :)

    Ahhh I'm scheduled for surgery on Friday don't have an exact time yet should know tomorrow! I'm so dang nervous I don't know if I'm gonna cry or just not think about it haha!!!

    Well I check the boards every night so I'll make sure to check
    Often Friday and keep you company as you recover! Have faith in your medical team and just know they will make sure the baby is safe. In my case she benefited from me having the surgery as well, which I'm sure will turn out the same for you. Just do your best to relax before hand and ask your doctors a ton of questions. I chatted with mine the whole night before my surgery, but that's because of how crazy my consult was. (Took an MRI and 5 hours to find it) it still made me feel way better having talked with everyone. Especially the ladies in/almost in labor. @ashleyhunt09

    I had my gallbladder out at 14 weeks my recovery was quick I was back to full time work 3 weeks after my surgeon wouldn't let me go back sooner the hospital staff were absolutely brilliant there is no pain at all anymore the surgeon recommended bio oil on the wound site after surgery after stitches dissolved

    Thank you!! So no pain after surgery?? I've only had a few shoulder surgeries and boy were they painful and I was given a ton of pain meds as soon as I woke up so I was wondering how it would work this time and if they could even give me any I forgot to ask but I'm all set and ready to go just got done pre registering at the hospital set for 330 pm Friday after noon!

    I was on dilaudid as inpatient and came home with oxycodeine. They also gave me a ton of Tylenol. None of it was dangerous, unless I went crazy and over dosed but that's dangerous even if I wasn't pregnant!

    They usually keep you only until your pain is manageable by pills instead of IV injections and you need to be able to urinate on your own. They'd like a BM but it wasn't forced since you know, pregnancy and poop don't get along. I should've been out the same day but I had the horrid and unfortunate reaction of my bladder saying "hey I had a catheter during surgery and don't want to do this on my own anymore" and I couldn't pee until later the next day. I was screaming in pain, I'm not even usually a complainer. I prefer to wait for my nurse to come in since I know they're busy but nope. I was slamming my button and screaming some nasty words. Thank goodness there's no kids on that floor. So if your bladder is feeling full, let me just say, the catheter is way less painful than your bladder literally stretching inside of you. As long as you don't have a complication like that, which they said is somewhat common but usually rare, you should be fine. My body was on the fritz before I even had my surgery. They warned me too. They said tell us if your bladder feels too full but I insisted I was fine and could do it on my own since I wanted to go home. I'm betting if I had let them do it when it was first suggested that I would've been fine and gone home the same day. I highly doubt this will happen to you though. @ashleyhunt09 in all complete honesty, the bladder thing hurt more than the healing and tenderness of having surgery. Even my wisdom teeth removal was easier because pain pills don't fix needing to pee! LOL

    They emptied almost 4 liters of pee out of me when my bladder was expanding. It was horrifying, the doctors were like "uh yeah, we need another bucket and quickly" . My husband thought it was hilarious.

    Also since tomorrow is Friday and I don't know what time zone you are in, I will try to check the boards before your surgery! If not, I hope you have a speedy recovery and can relax a little bit about it. Once the anesthesia wears off, if you can or remember to, please update us! If not I'll wait until Sunday to get nervous for you! theyre all really nice in the PACU (at least at our hospital they are but I'm sure everyone is) since they know it's nerve racking. You'll be completely naked with just that robe thingy. They have a bag for your belongings including clothes.

    I'm in las Vegas so its about 5 am here! Hubby just left for work for a few hours but I'm just ready for it to be over. I'm not to nervous right now but I'm sure as it gets closer too 2 when I have to be there I'll be a little nervous! Which is normal with any surgery! But I will definitely update as soon as I remember! Thank you for all of the positive feedback

    A friend of mine had a craniotomy to remove a brain tumor while she was pregnant with her first. Everything went fine and the baby is now a happy & healthy 2 year old. She said the only problem was that she couldn't have the really good drugs during recovery since she was pregnant, lol!

    So glad to hear that! \:D/ You're such a trooper. I've had gallbladder issues in the past and have been nervous that I'm going to have it out while pregnant even though my doctor and surgeon said its safe in the 2nd tri and actually somewhat common. Glad it's over for you!!

    I had a fetoscopic surgery on my twins for TTTS at 18 weeks and am having to go in again next week for another look and I'm 22 weeks now. They went inside and lasered blood vessels that were shared in my placenta as well as removed 1.65 liters of fluid from Baby A's sac and they are perfectly fine. I was put completely under as well as the babies so they wouldn't move during the operation. I'm just nervous to have a second go at the operation!

    Good evening, I had my first gallbladder surgery in 2005, and I was 8 weeks pregnant with my first son. Everyhting went very well, and had a healthy pregnancy and baby, and after I had my baby it made it easier for me to lose my baby weight. You will feel so much better after u have the surgery. Get lots of rest and take it easy after. God bless you!

    She had her surgery Friday and is on the mend. :)

    Thank you everyone! I am slowly getting better pretty painful but I walked my neighborhood , grocery shopped, made dinner and had family game night today so that's a huge improvement from how I was feeling yesterday (Saturday) a few more days and I'm thinking I'll be back to normal!! Thank you all for the very kind words and encouragement I definitely needed them and was reading back thru them as I awaited my surgery because they were running nearly two hours behind of course lol!

    @ashleyhunt09 I had my gallbladder out in April. Although, I was not pregnant at the time, the recovery with a 3 yr old was hard. Rest when you can but the walking and getting about like you are will help you the most. Eat light these first few weeks. I know everyone is different but I feel sure they have discussed with you the bathroom issues you may have since having your GB removed. Months later and during pregnancy I still have those same problems. Lighter, more frequent, not so spicy meals are the key. Your incisions will probably be sore as you heal and stretch at the same time. Mine bother me now and were completely healed when baby was conceived. I am glad you and baby came through surgery well and pray you have a smooth
     recovery.

    Sorry I finally had time to check the board! Yesterday (wed) seems to have been my best day yet! Woke up with no pain in my ribs or shoulders so that's a plus and now it seems as if my stomach is finally starting to look like I'm pregnant a lot of people have been commenting so maybe little baby girl is now going to grow!!

    That's great!!! Our baby shot up rapidly in growth rate after my surgery. I'm glad to hear it's going so well! :)
