18 Month Parental Leave - CDN politics

Anyone else see that the Liberals and Conservatives have both pledged a reform to parental leave. They have both said they would extend to 18 months within 1 year of the election. It would mean employment insurance benefits for an extra 6 months and that employers would have to hold your job.

In an otherwise depressing election, I'm pretty stoked on this one.

  • I'm so skeptical about campaign promises right now, but that would be pretty exciting!

  • Politicians have been talking about reforming maternity/parental leave for decades.  Nothing has ever happened.  I will believe it when I see it.

  • Where would either of them get the money to make good on this promise? Their own paychecks? Stephen Harper has run this country so far into the ground that I don't think whoever gets in next will be able to pull us out of it. Like PP said, I'll believe it when I see it.

  • They wouldn't give you any extra money though, just allow you to spread the 12 months of benefits over 18
  • It's 18 months at a reduced rate. So, instead of the 55% of our pay, it would be 35% (give or take). While there are some families that would be able to deal with the cut, there are more that wouldn't be able to do it.

However, I do like the Liberal's proposal of a flexible work day/work week.
  • I'm more excited for the fact that you could still make money while on maternity leave! (I believe if you are self employed.)

Like others have said, it's not going to be more than what you would get in the 12 months. It would just be extended.
  • I wish the U.S. had ANY kind of paid maternity leave...

No, no, no... I understand the extended reduced rate, I knew about that. What I mean is that for every promise they make, they have to be able to back actually making it by budgeting for it. Canada is in a recession right now, therefore I ask, where are they going to get the money? They can't exactly take any more from education and seniors. I suppose they could take from military, but since I'm predicting a Liberal minority government and Conservative opposition, the Conservatives will have a field day.

  • I'm self employed and I don't get maternity leave because I don't pay into EI so this idea does nothing for me... What would excite me is if they came up with better maternity leave for self employed people
