Anyone else have an old nipple piercing?

So it just occured to me today that my old nipple piercing that has been closed for a few years might effect my breastfeeding. Anyone else have stories to share? I wonder if the piercing would have damaged the duct.

Re: Anyone else have an old nipple piercing?

  • I am wondering the same thing? I am 26 weeks and took my rings out when I found out I was pregnant.

  • I have taken mine out, but they weren't fully healed when I did. I'm hoping they close up entirely by the time baby arrives.

Anyway, my piercer assured me that piercings wouldn't affect breastfeeding due to the way the piercing is positioned in comparison to the ducts. From what I understand it isn't possible for milk to come out from the piercing itself, but I haven't done further research on my own to confirm.

  • What worries me is I thought it had healed, but today I found white pus coming out the hole. That can't be good! I have a doctor's appointment on the 16th and am planning on asking her then.
  • Nipple piercings don't affect breastfeeding. I've done a ton of research on this especially since I've decided to keep mine even after baby is born and I plan of breast feeding. Number one rule is as always keeping them clean when feeding.
  • Mine were out and healed by the time I started. Didn't make any difference for me at all.

  • It shouldn't.Mine are pierced and I just clean mine often. I cleaned mine a few times a day when I was breast feeding. You won't have milk squirt out in 3 different directions or anything weird.
  • Oh, awesome thread. I thought I was going to just have to take them out, I didn't know it's possible to keep them. But the one time I had them out over night, putting them back in hurt and was hard. So I'm not sure it will be feasible for me.

The first couple of times I took mine out, it was really hard and painful to put them back in. It gets easier the more you do it. Just be careful the baby doesn't get fascinated and grab! My friend had her baby pull her chest studs out completely and it was awful.
  • Another thing to do is make sure you have barbells if you want to keep them in. I always took mine out but mine have been pierced for over 12 years so I never had an issue.
  • I have an old one that I took out, the "whit stuff" is not puss, it's just dead skin cells. It will not hurt baby. I've been producing some colostrum for a few weeks now so the old piercing does not seem to have damaged anything.
  • I'm worried I'll have trouble with one, because it got caught on my loofa and tore some. I actually ended up taking them out because it wouldn't heal with the ring still there. Mostly commenting to follow this thread.
  • Both nipples pierced nov of last year, removed in January and have minor scarring. Colostrum is flowing just fine for me! No problems whatsoever.
  • Well at this point op you'll find out regardless. Nothing you can do.
  • I had a nipple piercing and took it out in my very early twenties. I was allergic to the metal and it was constantly irritated. It completely healed and a few years later I was pregnant with our ds. I had no trouble at all!
Hopefully the same goes for you!
  • I'm so happy this thread is here! I was worried that the piercing may have damaged the ducts or scar tissue would have blocked the milk. My fiance always imagines it spraying out of the holes though. Lol.
  • I had my nipples pierced and took them out about 5 years ago. I have colostrum leaking out the holes that aren't 100% closed. I don't know about the breastfeeding yet though because DS1 wouldn't latch so I only pumped for a little while.
