Should we pump after breastfeeding baby?

I hear this a lot and if someone can clarify why - how soon after breastfeeding should we be pumping? If baby eats and emptied your breast does it make sense to pump right after? This is all so confusing!!!!!

Re: Should we pump after breastfeeding baby?

  • If baby does a good job emptying your breasts and seems satisfied I wouldn't pump unless your trying to up your supply or start a stash.

  • They say if you pump 10 min later for 10 min it can help signal for another letdown and it trains body to produce more. It's working well for me
  • I do not. I pump once a day to build a small freezer stash. Otherwise I just feed on demand. I feel having baby on the breast is better for your supply than pumping. BFing and pumping after every time is way too time consuming. I have two LOs, I don't have time for that. And as a SAHM I don't need a lot of milk stored.
  • I feed on demand, and pump after the first feeding of the day when DS usually takes a long nap. I generally get started 30-45 minutes after he falls asleep. Over the past 3 weeks or so I've built up almost 100 oz, and I'm hoping to have another 100 in my stash when I go back to work in 4 weeks. Other than that I don't pump unless I have been away from the baby for a few hours and he has gotten a bottle.
  • I pump 1-3 times a day, enough to give baby one bottle a day of pumped milk and to start my freezer stash. I usually pump after the first feed of the morning (when I have the most milk), then again when DH feeds baby his one bottle for the day. Sometimes I'll pump again after baby has his final feed of the night.
