Self Feeding and Food Selection

Riley wants to be grown up so badly. At every meal she wants to feed herself. I'm getting to the point where she pushes the baby food away and is looking on her tray for food to pick up and eat herself. She only has two teeth so her food selection is very limited at this point. I need ideas of what is ok to give her. Things I have given her so far are bananas, apples, steamed carrots, tomato and probably a couple of others I can't think of right now. What do/did you give your little ones with only a few teeth.

Re: Self Feeding and Food Selection

  • We're in the same boat! Zoe has 1 tooth! lol... The pedi told us at her 9 month visit pretty much anything is fine as long as it is in small pieces cause their gums are hard and they can kinda chew with them. I've given Zoe small pieces of chicken, banana, peas, carrots, corn, green beans, cheerios, cheese. That's pretty much all I've done so far, but pedi said anything goes at this point except peanuts and other choking hazards.
  • Loading the player...
  • Have you tried puffs?  They're good at this age to teach her how to chew.  You can giver her potato, sweet potato, pasta, rice, watermelon.  My pedi said no dairy until 9 months so I didn't do cheese until then.

Just try things out.  As long as they are small enough not to be choking hazards she should do just fine.  One trick that worked for Alexis was giving her a spoon that kept her occupied so I could sneak food in!!

  • Another thing you can try besides puffs is the yogurt melts and the crunchies (baby cheetos). You can try super soft pieces of cheese and even pieces of bread. Just carefully watch her. If she starts gagging she's not ready for that food.
  • Melanie, sounds like Zoe does well with all those food you give her so I will start to add some of what you give Zoe-I'm sure Riley would love the peas-no joke she is all about her green veggies! =)

Leanna, we've done puff for about 6 weeks now and at first she loved them but now that she's had big people food I think she's getting bored with the puffs. However I did just find the Sweet potatoe puffs and those did excite her a bunch-they are so yummy (and my personal favorite!)

Sammy, I almost bought the crunchies and I put them back on the shelf because I thought I might be getting ahead of myself for what she can handle. But I think she would love them so I'll pick some up this weekend.

    Thanks for all your advice!!

  • Riley will surprise you by what she can/can't handle. Only one way to know and its to try it!  Just start experimenting with stuff like Melanie suggested. When you are eating something if you see her looking at you like she is interested offer her a really small piece. We still do that with Mikey. The kid has tasted everything we've eaten which is great because he's not a picky eater. But have fun experimenting, its so much fun!

  • Nicky didn't get his first tooth until almost 11 months old and only had that one until he was about 14 months old, but has been eating/self feeding  solely table food since about 10 months old. I offered him anything that was soft enough to mash with his gums.

Suggestions: any soft fruit cut into small pieces, cut up grilled cheese sandwich, cooked chicken cut up,  macaroni, cheese cubes, pancakes, waffles, cheerios. cookies, toast, crackers, cut up fish sticks, cut up hot dog, french fries, tater tots, pizza.  Really, I gave him pretty much everything.  The only thing I held back on until he got molars was pretzels.

  • You know what, I totally forgot how young Riley is, so a lot of the stuff I mentioned might not be right for her yet.  At her age what i did was put something on the tray that Nicky could feed himself, like soft cut up cheese cubes, cut up Perdue Shortcuts, cut up pancake, banana, waffle, cheerios, etc and then spoon feed him a stage 3 or one of those Gerber graduates meals inbetween bites.
  • Check BRU, they have more selection on the puffs. We stocked up, and shipped back home, since we only have the banana and Sweet Potato. They also have Strawberry, Peach, Corn and many more. Also, the Choice brand from Walmart they have Blueberry and another one, that I can't remember the flavor. Also, they have the lil crunchies, they have Mild Cheddar, Veggies and again another one, I can't remember.

Ayden loves them all, but he also has 7 teeth. Like Melanie said, try different things, you will eventually find something she likes.
