First birthday gift - is this faux pas??

My LO's birthday is 5 days before Christmas, and for her first birthday I'd like to request donations to her college fund in lieu of gifts, if people want to give her anything at all. She'll get so many gifts for Christmas and won't know the difference especially for this birthday, so I'm wondering if people think this is tacky or offensive in any way? I obviously think it's genius and practical, but am interested in other's thoughts.

    while I agree its practical, I wouldn't be comfortable asking for that, but that's just me. However my LO's birthday is 3 days after Christmas lol. So I plan on creating a registry for her, people can buy from it for either. Family I just planned on telling them what I know she needs, like clothes.

    I think its a great idea! And you could phrase it in a way that isn't offensive, like "No gifts please, but if you're really feeling generous, we've started a college fund for baby!".
