Nipple Shields

For those moms that use nipple shields...
Do you use it the entire time LO is feeding or do you slip it out once there is a good latch?
My baby's doctor wants us to supplement after feedings as baby has not been gaining weight properly. She feeds with a nipple shield for her entire feeding and I'm wondering if this is preventing her from getting enough.

Re: Nipple Shields

  • I used a nipple shield the first two weeks and slowly weaned off it. At first we used it the whole time, then only on the first breast I offered, then only at night. Nipple shields can make it hard for baby to get the milk flow going but we wouldn't of been able to breastfeed without it in the beginning. Try to slowly stop using it, it might be a little painful at first, but it will get better, I promise. I still kept mine as a backup, but baby girl is 4 weeks old now and we practically never use it.

  • I almost always pump after she nurses with the shield and give her the pumped milk as a top off if she needs it. Pediatrician said to always pump after a,feeding with the shield anyways to keep supply up bc they usually aren't completely emptying a side
