Was anyone able to get temporary disability benefits? I am self employed and do not have the luxury of paid maternity leave. Curious how temp dis works
The laws differ by state, but I don't believe you can get state disability for pregnancy. SDI is for people who are physically/mentally unable to work due to a disability. Pregnancy isn't considered a disability. If you're on medical bed rest, though, then maybe. Again, the laws differ by state so you'll have to do research on your state's disability assistance.

Agreed. Pregnancy and recovery are not considered disabilities for multiple reasons. One of which I recall specifically being that a disability is caused due to the body or mind not working correctly and pregnancy is the result of the body working as intended.
If there's something strange underneath the hood. Who you gonna call? Your Doctor. If there's something weird and it don't look good. Who you gonna call? Your Doctor. Immediately. If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor. It's for your health and your child's.
I'm in California, I am currently on short term disability due to a twin pregnancy and needing to be on bedrest. As soon as I deliver it will change to standard maternity leave. Remember the disability amounts/coverage you have is determined by your highest paid quarter from the previous 12 months, so if you haven't paid in you may not be eligible. I would definitely reach out to the office in your state and find out how it works in your state and for self employed, it really can't hurt to try.
I'm a little lost on this myself as I don't qualify for FMLA because I am the only employee for the company I work for, but I am in California and what I have gathered I get SDI as I pay into it. We're supposed to have a meeting to discuss it. I know it differs by state but I will let you know what happens.
Yes I got short term disability payments with LO, both before labor because my midwife pulled me from work at 35/36 weeks due to preterm labor scare and for 6 weeks post-partum. Which is standard for STD in WA and OR. I don't qualify for FMLA because I now only work 2 days a week (have to work 24 hours/week for FMLA) but I still qualify for STD for 6 weeks post-partum with this baby.
I am approved for short term disability payments once I deliver, or have to leave early for medical reasons. Mine is through a private employer, I don't think state funded disability covers pregnancy.
Also adding that there's a difference between short-term disability and state disability insurance. Normally, short-term disability is something you would receive from your employer as an employment benefit or purchase from a 3rd party, and state disability insurance (SDI) is a government assistance program. At least, this is how it works in Ohio.
I just went out on disability today at 33 weeks unfortunately. I got a Drs note stating I couldn't lift more than 5 lbs and before you know it they suggested I apply for disability bc essentially I wouldn't be able to do anything at my job or even be left alone. I am a store manager often working by myself and lifting and moving very heavy things. My company goes through liberty mutual so I filed with them and they call my dr to verify I am out of work.
There are some states where employed persons pay into a short term disability system and can get payouts. I believe NJ is one of them, but PA is not (my company has employees who live in NJ who pay these deductions from their pay). In states that do not have this, typically an employer would pay into a STD insurance for their employers, or it is offered as an optional insurance. Each plan typically has its own rules as far as what qualifies and how much is paid out. Mine is employer paid and pays out 6 or 8 weeks for vaginal or section and pays out 60% of my wages.
I am in Wisconsin and pregnancy qualifies for STD benefits through my employer but it isn't much. $50/week before taxes. I am only taking 6 weeks maternity leave and still debating if it will even be worth it. Not sure how it works for the self employed though. Call and ask around. My employer also does not offer maternity leave pay, so I totally feel your stress.
