I was super worried about it too, but it really wasn't a big deal. I had 2nd degree tears, they stitched me up and I couldn't even tell I had torn at all! In fact, this time around I am far more concerned about the horrible hemroids I got from pushing! Those were way worse! Lol.
I was worried my first time too. Say no to an episiotomy, it's better to tear naturally. Remember to listen to your Dr/midwife. They will help coach you on when you push and when to pant which allows for your skin to stretch. Skin turns white before it tears, as it loses its blood circulation. You can ask for a hot compress to be applied if it looks like you're going to tear, which can help prevent it also.
I had a 3rd degree tear with DD, I had no pain meds during or after delivery...it wasn't so bad. The worst part was having to lay flat for so long after delivery for them to stitch me up, I was really uncomfortable! I say definitely don't go with the episiotomy, it is better to just tear if it is going to happen!
I agree that tearing is better than an episiotomy! I made it VERY clear to my doctor as she walked in to deliver... Even though she had already told me she doesn't to them. Lol
My midwife and some doulas I took a class with reccommend perineal massage for a couple of weeks before your due date to reduce the risk of tearing. It's something you can do yourself and I plan to if it will at all reduce the risk.
I had an episiotomy because my son's head and left arm came out together because the cord was wrapped around his neck and arm. I had an epidural and didn't feel it at all. I never felt any pain afterwards. My sister in law had a 2nd degree tear during her natural birth. She said with all the pressure of the baby pushing she didn't even feel it.
I tore during my delivery and I agree, let it happen naturally rather than having an episiotomy which can make it easier for you to tear. Obviously cases like @kristanoah would be an exception to this. I didn't have pain meds during delivery and didn't feel the tear. The ob that delivered gave me a shot to numb the area before he stitched me up and that hurt!
I will be trying perineum massage in advance this time to see if it will help. I wasn't able to last time.
I also tore, and agree it's better to let it happen naturally. I did have an epidural so I didn't feel it happen and even afterwards I don't think I would've even known that I tore if the doctor hadn't told me, and my tear was apparently a pretty bad one. There is just so much other discomfort that you feel down there after giving birth that the tear is kind of secondary.
I had a slight tear and then he cut me an inch or so. My sons right should got stuck and he was using the vacuum on him and it wasn't helping bc I just wouldn't tear any more. I was almost split from front to back. I was in major distress (bp was 189/120 and HR was 160) and so it was a get him out fast thing. He had issues bc of shock from labor....so it ended up being a good thing.
My doctor wasn't going to cut me, but on top of his shoulder getting stuck, he had the cord loosely around his neck. It was literally a last second decision and I'm glad he did it. It could have been much worse for my son and I. I will tear naturally if I have a vaginal delivery this time. I am having twins and they are going to be big babies (husband is 6'6" and egg donor is 6'1", so they are naturally big). My son was 7lb12oz and although I am 5'9", my pelvis never got big enough for him to get through. If the twins are about a pound or more less then I will not be having a csection and we will let me tear naturally.
I frozen depends to wear at night. We were out of town in the NICU level 3 for my son (nothing was wrong...just shock from labor) and so I was very active all day long. I would freeze pads and sit on my pillow all day....I'd walk every 30 minutes to loosen the tight muscles and that probably helped me heal pretty quick. I had to take Norco for the pain for only about a week but that was mainly bc I had to drive day two after the birth to meet my husband and be with my son a few hours away.
It sucks, but you go back to normal. Totally worth it if you need to have it done for safety, but my OB said he wish I would have torn naturally.
With my first pregnancy I read about the benefits of taking Evening Primrose Oil, I thought heck what could it hurt. I started right around 34 weeks 2 capsules a day orally (can be put inserted vagina), I was induced at 39 weeks and didn't have a scratch !!! Not a mark! When I told my DR he credited it to the EPO saying when it is taken it makes you vagina like elastic! I will definitely be taking it again with this pregnancy!! My DR also says WATER the more water you can drink thorough your pregnancy the better EVERY aspect of it goes!!
With my first I had an episiotomy (it was 12 years ago), and with my second I tore a little naturally. For the second one, I remember the doctor saying to stop pushing and wait a minute (just breathe) and I just couldn't and kept going...think that led to the tearing but not for sure. The second time was a much easier healing process. I don't know wether to attribute this to it being a second baby or no episiotomy??? I do know that after birth I was pretty sore and it felt like it couldn't possibly go back to normal, but it did, both times
I had an episiotomy with my daughter. I only pushed for 15 minutes total and didn't know the doctor even cut me until after the fact. I had an epidural and felt nothing. I was definitely sore afterwards but I don't know if it was exacerbated by the cut or not. I didn't think it was a big deal.
I tore with my son- they said I needed a couple stitches, I didn't ask details- I didn't want to know! I had an epidural with him and the pushing felt like I was ripping from one end to the other (not pain wise that's just the sensation I was getting and it scared me!) thank goodness I wasn't. My daughter came naturally and I didn't tear at all. I wonder if it was partially because I was more effective with my pushing because I could feel, but who knows. Even though it's happened to me before and it was fine- the thought of me ripping down there still gives me the heeby geebies
Talking of heebie jeebies...I feel like I shouldn't have even read this post hahaha. Obviously it's good to be educated and hear others opinions & experiences. I almost rather not think about this though. Lololol I'm such a big wuss, I can't stress too much beforehand, I just gotta go with the flow a little. Even in the baby books, I read it but I almost want to skip over the epistomy section lol
It's not something you should waste time worrying about in advance. It happens (happened to me in 2 places, I actually had a labial tear too- don't ask me how). I felt it happen but it ended up being the least painful part of recovery.
Re: second timers? has this happened?
