Chained to the pump

My baby who is now 3 weeks wasn't able to latch on due to a posterior tongue tie. I started pumping and I get two ounces each session. The baby used to eat every 3 hours and now is eating every 2 hours and I feel like I can't keep up. I feel like I need to sit in my room all day and pump but barely get enough to supply her needs. Does anyone have any advice?

  • Just Keep at it. My baby is a month and my supply has increased. I pump usually around 30 mins at a time and massage breasts while pumping to make sure they are getting emptied. Hope this helps but I really wanted to respond and say I feel your pain. My LO was putting me in severe pain and we never really got a good latch so I went to the pump. Now with her and a 2 year old son I feel helpless. Most afternoons when hubby gets home from work and gets son from daycare I just cry. My son is very jealous and throws fits cause daddy has the baby and mommy can't get unhooked from the pump..:(

  • are you doing anything to increase supply? brewers yeast always kicked things up for me. you can also try power pumping. that's where to pump for a few minutes at a time over several hours to simulate the baby cluster feeding.

  • Where can I get Brewers yeast? So if I power pump how often do you suggest? I've never heard of that.
  • I massage as well. I've tried going longer. 25 min and I'm just pumping but there is nothing there

    I found brewer's yeast in the health foods section of our chain grocery store. I make lactation cookies with it (that have oatmeal, flaxseed meal, and brewer's yeast in them ... and chocolate chips just for fun!). I've found these, along with eating a bowl of oatmeal and drinking Gatorade, help my supply. And drinking tons of water! Milk supply is normally highest in the middle of the night and morning and is lower during the afternoon and evening, so if you can pump between 1 am - 8 am, you'll probably get more results.

  • I've also found I get a little more out if I use warm compresses before and during pumping. I just fold over my heating pad and tuck it in my bra. I alternate over and under my breasts whenever I feel like I need to be getting more out.

    some good info there. it's a pain at the time but will increase supply pretty quickly.

  • For me oatmeal works like magic!!! I got a small slow cooker and make some yummy Apple oats at night and eat it in the morning. Usually it's about 1oz difference of milk making.
    Also, fats, lots and lots of fats (good fats like chicken or beef.) And trust me, I like to be skinny.
  • You might want to just take a shot at putting baby back to your breast as well to both see if you can get breastfeeding started back up and possibly increase your supply. My LC said that my baby had a posterior tongue tie - he had all kinds of stuff happening (high palate, cranial asymmetry, lip tie) that caused a super painful latch for the first 5-6 weeks, but we're now at 8 weeks tomorrow and BF is a breeze. I think he just needed to grow and once his mouth got bigger things got easier. Sometimes it just takes time.
  • Power pumping is to mimic cluster feeding. It is pump till no more is dripping out. Then rest ten mins and pump ten mins on and off for a total of an hour. I know how you feel. My lo and I had such issues in beginning that I started depending on the pump. We try bf most of the day when husband is at work half the time it works out other times he just wails and I have to go get a bottle. He's never satisfied from bf which I'd defeating when I have to finish with a bottle. Honestly I feel he's so spoiled from instant gratification from the bottle the breast isn't worth his time anymore. Sorry for my woes. It's all about supply and demand. The more times you empty the more your body believe it needs I'm 6 w pp and just started seeing a increase to about 30 oz a day. Brewers yeast tablets I heard are good.
