Maternity Leave PSA for California Workers

I just thought I would put this out there for any California moms out there who are trying to navigate the ins and outs of maternity leave within their company. I just want you to know (because I did not know this!) that if you are employed full time in the state of California you likely qualify for 6 weeks paid family leave. The STATE of California, not your employer, pays 55% of your income for 6 weeks, regardless of whether your employer provides maternity or short term disability benefits. So you could potentially collect benefits from the state and your employer. Or, if you are upset because you don't get paid leave from your employer, you're in luck because you likely get it from the state. I hope this helps someone, it seriously helped me.

  • Its actually even more than that. In CA, you could qualify for disability (see first link) AND family leave (second link). 6 weeks of each is standard. Disability does provide 2 additional weeks for c-section and/or up to 4 weeks before baby if doc orders it. All this is at 55% pay.

  • @MaMinette13 see @narissa2013 's comment. You can apply online through the state at the link above but there are also phone numbers you can call to speak with someone and apply that way as well. I spent a lot of time on the phone because my employer is technically based out of a different state, but it turned out it didn't matter because I have been paying CA state STD insurance. I'm a field sales rep so was kind of confused about this. In any case, check out the site and call them if you have questions. I would definitely recommend getting familiar with it now so it's easy peasy when the time comes. And thanks @narissa2013 for posting the link - I'm a spaz and spaced :D
  • OP, thanks so much for the reminder that I need to look into this stuff asap!  :)  And @narissa2013 thanks for the links!
  • I had no idea that states did that even. I need to look into my state. I doubt it will but its still something worth looking into and knowing.
  • Unless you are a teacher (or pretty much any government worker) in the state of CA. We don't pay into state disability, and so we don't get SDI. Plus, as a teacher in the state of CA, we have to use up all of our "sick leave" before our employers start paying maternity leave. Sucks, I know...but I just wanted to throw that out there for any teachers in this lovely state of ours.
  • @cyanope that sucks! I'm sorry to hear that - I hate how we treat our teachers in this country. :(
  • @cyanope - That sucks!  Echoing @ljalmeida I really wish teachers were treated better.  :(
