Daycare search question

Hello all...I have a question regarding day care searching as we are just now beginning our search (which is a problem in its own). Anyways, i'm wondering if anyone knows if it's appropriate to inquire with the daycare about their vaccination policy? I'm not looking to start a debate or discussion about anti-vaccination versus pro vaccination, but I prefer that my newborn baby goes to a provider who requires vaccinations since we are looking at home daycare, if that is such a thing and is allowed. This is our first baby so it's our first time looking for daycare.

Thank for your help with this!!

Re: Daycare search question

  • In many states vaccinations are required for a center's accreditation. No harm in asking about it. Will give you the info you need to make an informed decision :)

  • If that's a big deal to you I would definitely triple check with the director of whichever daycare you choose. When I worked at a daycare as a teacher, a parent had to type up something saying it was against their beliefs to vaccinate and that was it. I agree that you might have better luck with some place that is in-home and that is a totally acceptable question to ask. I watch kids in my home part time through the week and both of the little ones I watch are vaccinated as well as my own DD.
  • Funny thing is many require the kids to be vaccinated, but the providers don't have to be. I also asked if the teachers at our center (in the infant room) were required to have a whooping cough vaccine and they said no, that some may be, but they weren't required.
  • 100% You should ask! We just picked on this week and each daycare we went to its one of my first questions.  They are probably used to the question!  You should also find out if the teachers/staff are as well :)  Good luck!
  • You have to be very careful with At-Home centers, make sure that they have their certificates up-to date and posted. Then, I would ask what their policy is on vaccination and how they enforce that policy and whether their care providers are also fully up-to date on their vaccines. Because it is one thing to say that it is policy it is another thing if they don't have a course of action if someone tries to slip through the record keeping gaps.
