GTKY- trick or treaters

how many trick or treaters do you tend to get at your house?

we used to live in the country and would literally get like 2 or 3 groups and it was sad. Now that we live in a village we got probably around 60 last year. We sat on our front porch with our dog and it was so much fun to hand out candy and get Simona some good petting in because she loves kids.

Re: GTKY- trick or treaters

  • When we lived in the city, we got 1 kid in the two years we had our condo.

We now live in a big development area and people drop their kids off in our neighborhood to trick or treat. No matter how much extra candy I buy, I always run out after the first hour and have H go to the store to buy more. I think last year I had to buy 5 extra giant bags of candy from Costco

  • We get maybe 2 or 3 dozen. At my mom's house they get probably 300! We ran out with probably an hour left when I went last year to help pass out and take my daughter around the block for a few pieces.
  • Yep same here they come in vans and load up the big cars full of kids so we never have enough. It might be different here though this year because crime here is at an all time high and haven't seen people out in our neighborhood after dark lately, sigh I wish we could move
  • I see it being way crazier this year since it's on a Saturday!

  • We don't get too many (maybe 10) because we live so close to downtown. Our downtown has tons of Halloween events and displays, so pretty much everyone goes there.
  • We live in an apartment complex, but we have the front unit with our own yard, so if we sit in our yard and pass out candy, we get plenty of trick-or-treaters.  There's a very wealthy neighborhood about 4 blocks from us that puts up elaborate decorations and is located on canals that usually get lit up as well, so lots of people park in our neighborhood and walk to that neighborhood.  I can't blame people for wanting to go there - rumor has it that most houses give out full size candy bars!  But we still catch a lot on their way to and from.

Full disclosure:  I have to buy candy the day before or on Halloween, even though it's all pricey and slim pickins by that time, because H and I will just eat it all before trick-or-treaters even come if so.  No self control.

  • We try and make it a point to never be home on Halloween. The first year after we had moved into our house we got maybe 30-40 kids and they were still coming to the door at 11 PM (all the lights were out, there was no indication that we were even home). Ever since then we have packed up and gone over to friends houses on Halloween. Plus I only like giving out candy to little kids 12 and under and older kids who really put forth the effort on their costumes. It seems like every year we see less and less younger kids dressed up and more and more older kids running around with just a mask on and it makes me mad!

  • @SoSweetTea1124 yes! And some of the teens are obnoxious and have the nerve to complain about our candy. I enjoy seeing the little ones get excited and their cute little costumes but the teens and older not so much

that is too many! That would take the fun out of it for me.

  • I wish there was an age limit to ToTing. I get annoyed with the older kids, too. We didn't ToT after 5th grade.

Not sure how many we'll get. We moved her a year and a half ago and I was working last year, so H left the lights off. We'll see this year.

This year we won't plan to be home either we live in an apartment so we won't have any anyways.
  • This is my first Halloween at my new house so I have no idea what the turnout will be. I expect it will be good since there's a lot of kids in my neighborhood.

Anyone watch Curb Your Enthusiasm? I just watched the Halloween episode recently where Larry gets super pissed about Trick or Treaters who are "too old" in his eyes and don't have good enough costumes on. So he doesn't give them candy. The kids end up TPing his house and spray painting Bald Asshole on his garage. Larry calls the cops and they advised him that in this situation of "trick or treat," it's best to "just give the treat."  :))  Ha, I love that show.
  • We are never home because we take our babies trick or treating. I think if we stayed we'd have a about 20-40 kids. My neighborhood has lots of kids and the town is small, there are only 3 neighborhoods here, so most people go from neighborhood to neighborhood.

  • We just moved to a new apartment building, so we have no idea!  Last apartment we got zero, which made me sad.  I love seeing all the little trick or treaters dressed up!  This year we know we at least have a handful of kids in our complex, so we'll at least see them.  I'm gonna try to stock up on one medium sized bag of candy and get some non candy treats for the whole teal pumpkin thing too.
  • I think we had 30-50 last year. I always WAY overbuy candy, so by 7:30 I'm giving out handfuls instead of 1-2 pieces. Fingers crossed we'll get a few more this year. H and I love Halloween (I think he secretly wishes we had a newborn this Halloween so we could dress her up and show her off...haha).

My ex and I used to go all out with Halloween decorations. Tombstones, skeletons, skulls, blow up monsters, the works. Then, one year we were vandalized. They did about $1000 in damage and we never put the stuff up again.

  • I hope we get some! Our last apartment was a high rise in the city, so we got nada. Now we're in a spread out complex and I see lots of kids around, so fingers crossed! I'll prepare...and maybe get "stuck" with a ton of candy.

Oh man, that sucks!!! We actually do not have much in the way of decorations besides a bunch of pumpkins. We will carve jack-o-lanterns and I may get some fake cobwebs. H likes to watch the Halloween themed Peanuts movie and drink hot cider or cocoa (and eat candy) while we wait for trick-or-treaters. He's goofy like that.
  • In my last neighborhood we had no street lights or sidewalks so very few came by. Last year my hubs was deployed and I didn't want to open the door to strangers at night so I just put a bowl out and there was still some left the next morning.

We just moved in Feb to a nicer neighborhood with a good amount of kids, so I bet there will be quite a bit this year. Better stock up on candy!!! Darn...

  • We live in a walk up apartment building in an area with no kids so I've never gotten a single one for about 5 years. But I grew up in a larger apartment building in a more family friendly area and I always thought it was the best growing up. We'd hit like 3 buildings in one night and get sooo much candy. It was so efficient!
  • I live in the country so 0. I usually make a candy bag for my three neighbor kids. Then we take DD downtown for the kids trick or treating at the stores. And finally we stop at all the relatives houses on our way home. I do know almost the whole town just goes to this one huge neighborhood
  • We live close to the city and a block from a bigger road so trick or treaters go north from our block. We get maybe 4-5 families because of that. We'll take DS to see all the crazy decorations a few blocks down and then head to the community bonfire to have some cider and donuts.
  • we just moved into a new neighborhood and the neighbors warned us that our neighborhood usually gets around a thousand trick or treaters every year.  I guess I'd better stock up on candy!
  • This is our first Halloween in this neighborhood but there are a ton of kids so I assume we are going to get lots of traffic. I'm on the fence about turning all the lights off and pretending we aren't home or buying candy and dealing with it.

I'd buy enough for what I would deem fun and then when that runs out turn off your light and snuggle up with a movie or something.

1,000??? I couldn't afford that! I'd be the house giving out pennies or like the 1 mini tootsie roll  :)

  • We bring our German Shepherd in for the night because he would be anxious with all the people roaming around the neighborhood and might try to jump the fence (even though it's backed up by an electric fence too). But he flips out when he hears the doorbell (even if it's on tv) so we typically turn off the lights and either have a quiet night in or go over to a friends' get together for the evening. There seems to be tons of trick or treaters in our neighborhood though. The price of having a super-protective dog. Haha
  • We'll probably hand out candy for the first hour to as many of the thousand trick or treaters that show up and then turn off the lights and head out trick-or-treating together with our 2 year old :)
  • We are always gone doing something on Halloween so I have no clue if we even get any!!! So this year I'm going to put this out lol
  • I love Halloween!!! I was so excited last Halloween when we bought our house in a residential neighborhood so I could finally pass out candy. Then... The trick or treaters wouldn't cross the street!!! Boo hoo. Our side of the street doesn't have a sidewalk so apparently they stay to the other side. Last year I sadly watched them walk right past our awesomely decorated front porch ( with lights and music and all ) and ate all the candy myself ( with the help of my husband of course) so sad lol. This year we will follow suit with everyone else on OUR side of the street and keep the lights off and my dreams of passing out candy shattered. Sigh. On the bright side, at least in the winter not having a sidewalk is a bonus (less shoveling)!
