Overtired baby

I know she is probably going through her 6 w growth spurt but my LO was up from 12-6am last night. I tried everything not to stimulate her so she'll go back to sleep. She had pooped 7 times (no joke) and was cluster feeding but then she would take herself off the boob and start screaming. Finally as a last resort we put her in her car seat and swung her and eventually she fell asleep. I feel like a terrible mom resorting to the car seat. I feel like I failed. Now she's exhausted (as am I) and is sleeping because she's so tired. I need some advice on how to get her to not be over tired. I don't want to wake her because she s so tired but I do not want another night like this. She hasn't been a good sleeper the past few weeks when her 2/3 week growth spurt messed up her days and nights. Thanks for reading and any advice is welcomed with open arms.

Her current state. Tummy time is a no go.

Re: Overtired baby

  • I'm sorry! I'm sure you're just exhausted. I would probably let her sleep now so she can catch up on her sleep from last night, then just make sure she's awake for 2 hours before you put her to bed tonight so she still will sleep for you tonight. (Maybe try giving her a bath to keep her awake during that time?) It's impossible to actually play with a newborn when they're at the point of exhaustion, so I wouldn't force it :) Hopefully she's back on track tonight!

  • Thanks @jen83mn tonight is a bath night so hopefully it will help with something. I just want her to sleep somewhat at night. I feel like I get nothing accomplished. Most days I can't even get dressed because we're up all night and when we finally sleep and get up the day is gone! And I am no help when I haven't slept at least for a little bit.
  • @jen83mn that is a great piece of advice. I'll have to start doing that. Some days I can barely finish a cup of coffee!!
  • with my first the Moby wrap was a lifesaver for times like that. it can be tricky to get them down and keep them asleep though.

  • We had like a week straight of nights like that right around the two week mark. Baby just would not go to bed and was either breastfeeding or screaming until 3 or 4 in the morning. Last night and tonight he's been much calmer but still wakes up every two hours to feed for an hour or longer. The way I deal with it is to think about how this is a temporary stage: either the result of a crazy growth spurt or colic, which is said to go away around 3 to 4 months. It's a long period but at least it's an end point to look forward to and to know that this will pass and one day just be a bad distant memory. Apparently as a baby I was a terrible sleeper and my parents always remind me, so I just picture that moment in the future where I tease him about how cranky and hungry he was at night.
  • I'm sorry you're going through this but she's pretty darn cute there! Do you have a swing? Might give you the same effect as the car seat but you wouldn't be swinging it and might get some sleep too. If you don't have one it might be worth checking out your local buy and sell facebook group or Craigs list/ kijiji to find one.
Sleep deprivation is no joke. Hang in there, this will pass.
