Congested and spitting up mucus

My little guy is 3 weeks old (a month on the 10th) and for the past few days he's sounded really congested and our pedi told us to use saline drops along with continuing to suck up his boogies. Well today he's started to spit up blobs of green mucus along with his regular spit up. I've called the doctors office 9 times and have yet to speak to a person that had more than "ok I'll transfer you to the nurses line" to say before putting me on hold for 15+ minutes. The last 5 calls the line doesn't even ring to talk to anyone at all. Does anyone know a way to help my little guy feel better? He doesn't have a fever just really congested and spitting up mucus.

Re: Congested and spitting up mucus

  • My daughter has had this going on for 3 weeks. Saline drops have not done anything for her, and I don't find the anot sucker does anything. We bought a small cold air humidifier and put it by her bassinet. This has helped to break up the mucus at night. Also, we propped up her matress slightly to help open her airways. The Dr and midwfie both said that's all we can do, if she doesn't have a fever then we just have to deal with it until it clears up. Maybe one of those suggestions might at least help your son sleep well at night so he can start feeling better. i hope your Dr gets back to you soon so he can be checked out!! Best of luck.

  • @katymeganmoore how do you prop her up? He sleeps in the pack and play by our bed so Im not sure how to prop him up safely
  • @tstew96 I rolled up a small towel and put it under one end of her bassinet matress so that the whole matress has a slight incline. A nurse suggested this to me, because putting a pillow or something on top of the matress could be dangerous if she were to roll in her sleep and get caught between it and the matress. .. I'm not sure how you'd do it on your bed or with a pack and play. Although I have heard of something called wedge pillows that are used to prop a baby up at night. I don't know anything else about them... Might be worth you looking up?
  • Are you using the blue bulb they gave you at the hospital? If so, run to target or BRU and buy a nosefrida. You haven't sucked snot until you've sucked snot with a nosefrida.

  • Get the graco battery operated boogie sucker, we found it at Walmart. It was a life changer! We use it at least 1-2x/day, never imagined someone so small could make so many boogers haha. But that thing gets it all out fast!
