Breastfeeding worries!

Okay I am a FTM... And breastfeeding is going well so far... It no longer hurts, babies gaining weight etc. (she's 15 days old.) however, I'm worried about when I go back to work in a month and if I will be able to keep it up. So does anyone have any successful stories of pumping and working full time. I wasn't too worried about my supply until now and the fact that in a 15 minute session I only get a combined 5 ounces from both breasts... Should I be working on increasing my supply? Will it grow over the next couple weeks? I am really worried. I do not have the desire at this moment to switch to formula. I am just looking for advice...

And lastly... Do babies know when they are nursing when they are full? Or should I stop her after a certain time period? Just seeking advice...

Thanks in advance ladies!

Re: Breastfeeding worries!

  • Five ounces is a good amount for being two weeks postpartum! People forget how tiny their LOs stomachs are. You are pumping more than what baby would probably be eating at this point. I can't give you any success stories because my body sucked (no pun intended) at pumping. When I went back to work after DD1 my supply tanked and nothing I did helped (I tried everything!). We made it to six months with BM exclusively and then about half BM, half formula for another month, but it was a ton of work. It was SO hard to get away from my desk to pump (but I did) and I gradually saw less and less in the bottle until it wasn't worth doing anymore. I still BF exclusively when I was home, and I think that's important. Good luck (hope you fare better than I did!).

  • I had no problems pumping when I went back to work last time and bf DD1 for 13 months. Sounds like you are getting a great amount! I'm getting 4 oz at a time at 13 days pp.
  • 5 ounces is great! At 2 weeks, your baby is probably taking in 2-3oz per feeding so that means you're making enough for at least 2 feedings.

I nursed and pumped working full time for my first so it can be done! Just make sure you set aside time in your schedule to pump. Drink lots of water/ Gatorade. If you have trouble finding time, pump on the drive to and from work. Whenever I noticed a drop in supply, I'd add a MOTN pumping session. It also helped boost my freezer stash.
