Dates wrong.. 2.5 week setback

I posted in the ultrasound thread, but now that the new discussion button is back, I'm posting here. I had my first appt today expecting to be 8 weeks based on LMP. They did a transvaginal ultrasound because they were worried about a possible cyst or ectopic pregnancy - I didn't have any problems there. The problem was that the sac was measuring at only 5w4d. You couldn't see anything in it yet. Based on when I think I ovulated, this would make sense because my cycles are usually long... but that didn't stop me from bursting into tears. Hormones and straight up fear, I guess. Neither the tech or the doctor were worried and they want me to come back in 2 weeks for another ultrasound, but I'm freaking out. Is 5w4d just too early to see anything? Has anyone had a similar experience with dates being off?

I starting temping in the middle of my cycle so I never got the crosshairs. I think I conceived on August 29th or 30th.

Re: Dates wrong.. 2.5 week setback

  • I found out today that I am a week earlier than expected also! My LMP was the 4th of August, leaving me at 9weeks 1day, but I had spotting on the 17/18/19 which I was initially told was implantation bleeding, but according to todays US Im measuring at 8weeks 1day, with a healthy heartbeat, so its only a weeks set back, but as long as everythings looking good Im ok with that! Im back on the 27th of October for my official due date reveal. 5weeks 4days is super early, so it is likely thats why it was hard to find your little bundle of joy, thoughts and prayers, keep me updated when you find out!! :-)

  • If you think you know when you ovulated, as you stated, and that it makes sense based on that, then I would not worry.  Doctor offices are notorious for basing your due date on your lmp.  They always assume ovulation on cd 14, which we all know that not everyone does on cd14

  • Based on my LMP, I should have been 8 weeks at my first ultrasound. I was only 6 weeks 2 days though. I have never had a regular cycle so I wasn't surprised...just a little disappointed because I'm already sick and I thought I was further along.
  • This is so so so common. They saw exactly what you'd expect at 5w4d. Try to remember that the medical community follows a particular standard, but you have information that supports this timing. Will be thinking of you!

  • There's been a bunch of threads like this now that we're all hitting our 8-10 week marks. You may find this one reassuring:

  • Thanks, I appreciate the support! I felt like a crazy person walking around crying. That was coincidentally my first episode of pregnancy crying since I found out almost 3 weeks ago.

  • I don't understand why you are worried? If you know when you ovulated, and 5 w4d makes sense for that date, AND we know that I you really can't see anything until at least 6 weeks (in optimal conditions), AND your doctors weren't worried, then I'd say you need to take a deep breath and relax. Seems like all is good :)

  • I don't think this needed it's own thread...

  • @kns1988 - Try not to worry too much, I know that is harder to do than say though! 2 weeks ago I went for my first appointment (thinking I was 7 weeks) and they did an ultrasound only to tell me that I was measuring 5.5-6 weeks but they only could see a yolk and a gestational sac. They told me to come back in a week for another ultrasound. The entire week I literally was sick with anxiety and fear. I kept looking up signs of miscarriage because I was convinced that was my fate and that I was going to lose my LO. My DH wanted nothing to do with it and said that I should turn my fears to prayers and be optimistic rather than putting all that stress on the baby. He was right... I went for my second ultrasound on Tuesday and we were able to see our "little blob" that measured 6 weeks 5 days. I would not worry at this point. My doctors all told me that I had nothing to worry about --- do your HCG levels and progesterone levels look good? If so... try to find some way to pass the time so that you don't have to cause yourself unnecessary stress and anxiety. However, do understand that I was where you were last week and I know how you're feeling. T&P being sent your way!
  • They haven't tested my HCG levels but I'll be talking to the nurses today. Thank you for the thoughts, everyone! Sorry for being so anxious... I try not to post new threads because I know it annoys people.

  • This happened to me. My LMP was August 5th.. I went in for a dating ultrasound expecting to be 6 w 6 d and the ultrasound measurements put me at 4w 6d. I panicked, but I have 38 day cycles and if I was 2 weeks ahead it would have been an immaculate conception... I was tracking ovulation with OPKs and the based on 4 w 6 d, it definitely was right around time of conception. I keep having to tell myself this to ease my anxieties. Good luck with your pregnancy..

I don't think you should be worried at all based on how you are tracking and when you ovulated. And don't worry about posting a new thread. When you're stressed like this, it's ok to reach out to a community for reassurance. Good luck but I am sure you will be fine.
