evil eye??

Hi all so I don't know if u you ladies have heard of the evil eye, or if you guys believe in it but I have had some incidents that occurred over the past week or so.

So last week we took LO to finally meet his grandmother from his side of the family. We got there the baby was all happy and active as usual. Within that hour that we got there though, he began to cry uncontrollably. At first I thought he was just gassy/teething. But he would just not stop crying. This cry lasted about three days until the doctor recommended us to switch formulas, which actually helped alot. But those three days were hell and LO usually doesn't cry like that. It waz just nonstop crying, it was the kind of cry that made him turn red, a cry that sounded like he was getting hurt. It was something that i never expirienced before. Just plain horrible. OK so we switched formulas, everything was good.

So today we went out to the mall, baby was just fine enjoying the outdoors, well today a lady complimented him and said how cute he was. Didn't think much of it. Once we got home however, he showed the same symptoms from the last time we visited his grandma. Uncontrollable crying our of the top of his lungs. I know what you may be thinking its probably colic, well thats what i thought the first time it happened, but then I thought to myself how can this happen precisely when we take him out. Mind you that we have token him out numerous times before and he has never acted that way. I'm actually starting to believe someone gave him the evil eye. I don't know what to do. Does anybody believe in this? I read on it and it supposedly says that in babies it can cause unconsolable crying, vomiting, or illness. Anyways prayers for my lil one would be appreciated, it really hurts seeing him like this.

I've not heard of the evil eye, and I don't think I want to read up on it because I find myself even having trouble watching commercials with previews for horror films or those ghost stories without feeling nervous and anxious and uneasy.

Here's some POSITIVE energy thoughts and prayers sent your way! I hope LO is just having a tough few days and there's another explanation.

I had a similar situation...my daughter showed signs of gassiness a couple weeks after birth, as she had gotten fussy and had an incident at home where she cried for like an hour in the evening and nothing seemed to console her, she got red and was out of breath from crying so much. I had taken her out for a couple errands here and there but twice when I took her to visit my grandma & aunt (a couple weeks apart) she got a cry attack after about and hour or so of being there. Took about an 1- 1.5hrs to console her. We couldn't figure out what was wrong, we just figured that she was out of her element. Afterwards we decided we would refrained from beoing out of the house around her bedtime as we figured it was extra fusskness from be tired and it if her element. A couple weeks later I ended up finding out she had acid reflux and was put on Zantac. Since she started the medication she hasn't had any crying attacks. If changing her formula helped the first time, your babies stomach may be upset. I went thru 3 formulas, none helped until she was put on medication. I'm not saying your baby has acid reflux, but maybe their stomach was upset those 2 times and that caused the excessive crying.

My huaband is a very big believer in black/white magic and its steeped really far into his culture and beliefs (if baby is really upset he says a mantra to try remove the heavy feeling, too
Much crying means the name is too heavy for our baby's soul etc) anyway if he believes that someone has done something similar to an "evil eye" or a curse then they say the best way to "cleanse your spirit" is to bathe in seawater. Obviously taking your LO in the beach isn't reasonable but getting sea water and bringing it home could be an optikn

I do not want your to take offense. Are you Hispanic/Latino decent? If not please tell me . If so I think I have heard this happening in your culture. I've actually had someone cover up their babies eyes from me before. I was just looking at your baby not evil eyeing it! Lol

I will definitely try the salt water thanks. And I am hispanic, no offense taken. Yes it is taken seriously. I didn't think much of it at first until I had my son, my grandmother and mom warned me about evil eye and that he should have an amulet. I will b purchasing one asap.

^^ actually, the evil eye is a prevalent thought in many cultures. In some cultures, they do not want someone to praise a baby or child unnecessarily ("What a good baby!"). To give unwarranted praise increases the chance of drawing the evil eye. (So OPs the baby having issues right after being praised by a stranger is a classic curse faux paux) It's really a very interesting thought on curses, since it can be given unknowingly and without intent (unlike your traditional curse, which requires intent and belief).

I'm the ultimate paradox as I'm a science loving gal, who believes in curses (and ghosts and other stuff like that). I don't know how to remove an evil eye curse, tho, just in case.

OP, I think its more likely your LO has just been coincidentally cranky while you've happened to be out of the house. It might be a leap or a growth spurt. But I will send you some good energy, all the same.

I am Greek, DH is Lebanese. Our baby wears an evil eye amulet as described by PP. There are certain people and family memebers I won't bring my child around because I believer they will give my baby the evil eye.

Cal it crazy but this is the culture we grew up in!

^^ curious tho, the amulets help to protect against the evil eye (is my understanding, I could be wrong) but not help it to go away if its been cast already? How would you go about removing the curse once its in place?

(Truly, honestly curious. Its not like you can smudge your baby like you can your home)

Indonesians believe ocean water or urine is cleansing due to the different current and energies in the water. Also burning banana leaves and a specific Islamic prayer can remove curses.

I believe in SE Asia to have anything lifted from you ypu need to have full
Ceremonies with prayers water etc to be free but if that person still has your belongings (hair being the best) it's a lot more complicated.

If you don't mind me asking, Why those people? What makes you think those people would be the giver of the evil eye and why would they do it? Who are they?

For Indonesia a person with a long
Left pinky nail is an indicator that they dabble in magic but it's there "eyes" that tell you if its good or Bad magic. I believe all Bad magic is health & weAlth including death but I'm not sure if magic would ever be done on a baby

I don't think I've heard of this before (unless it's been in a tv show or movie). Very interesting! For people who believe in this, it can be someone intentionally and unintentionally doing this? I was thinking, who on earth would want to do this to a baby??? But I almost feel that the thought of it being done unintentionally is even more alarming. Is this something believed only done to babies?

I remember hearing about this in a cultural anthropology class. I think this is common in Meditarrnean cultures. If you ever see jewerly with eyes on it, that is to protect you against the evil eye.

@enigmaticjj it CAN be done unintentionally, which would definitely be alarming. And it can be done to anyone, but its believed that babies and children are more likely to draw the attention of the evil eye. Wiki actually has a pretty interesting page on it, with breakdowns via cultures, etc.

@mellymar, just read Wiki. Very interesting to read about the origins and why blue and green eyed people are believed to be more likely to be able to give the evil eye. I wonder why this isn't really seen in Eastern Asia since it's seen in other parts of Asia.

I say this very carefully and with all due respect - I've grown up in the Bible Belt and have known people who because of their religious beliefs didn't think it was okay to go to a doctor to get much needed procedures done because they were trying to believe for their healing, which is all fine and good, I believe in God and his ability to heal (so not knocking these beliefs or any beliefs), but I am cautious to balance my spiritual beliefs with what the natural world also has to offer..if that makes sense? Basically what I'm trying to say is, even if your child has been given the evil eye, I would also take him/her to the doctor to rule out any other underlying issues such as reflux or digestive troubles as previous posters have suggested. There may be something that doctors can do to help physically that might be overlooked if you assume it's only something spiritual. And I say that with all due respect, I've just seen people avoid medical help because of religious beliefs, when the problem could've been taken care of and they wouldn't have had to believe their way to health..which doesn't always turn out as hoped. But I know what you're talking about is different from Bible Belt stuff, that's just what I have to relate with haha.
