My OB decided to induce me at 39 weeks due to chronic hypertension. My cervix was closed and only 50% effaced, so the plan was to use cervidil for cervix ripening followed by pitocin for contractions. I went in Sunday night and got cervidil that gets dosed every 12 hours. After 12 hours of some mild cramping, my cervix dilated to 1cm and was 80% effaced. I discussed the lack of progress and it was decided for me to get another dose of cervidil after taking a shower and eating breakfast. The second dose of cervidil lead to some regular contractions every 5-7 minutes. I received IV pain medication and was able to rest. After that dose, my cervix had not really changed, but doctor decided to proceed with pitocin. Eight hours on pitocin, and there was again no cervical change and I was no longer having contractions. My nurse said I was likely headed to c-section, which I wanted to try to avoid. I felt really defeated. I discussed it with my doctor and she said that there were still non-surgical things for me to try and being thst baby was tolerating the induction well, there was no need to proceed with c-section unless I was done with the induction. I went took a shower, had lunch and a foley bulb was placed and pitocin was re-started. Four hours later, I started having regular contractions every 3-5 minutes and I was dilated to 4cm. The doctor then broke my water and I received an epidural. With the epidural I was unable to feel the contractions but was still able to move my legs without difficulty. They continued the pitocin drip and placed an internal monitor to track the contractions better. I rested and slept as my uterus continued to contract. Seven hours later, my baby girl was born vaginaly after 10 minutes of pushing. I am so thankful that I didn't give up on the induction and they my doctor did not push me to a c-section. I had been in the hospital for 51 hours by the time I had my baby girl and every minute of my hospital stay was worth it.
Good luck everyone!
