Pumped milk to formula

edited October 2015 in September 2015 Moms
i am wanting to transition my baby from pumped milk bottle fed to formula. My busy schedule doesn't work with pumping and the time I do have I want to enjoy my family, pets, and have time for school and work as well. What is the best way you ladies have tried to switch your baby. I have milk still, and plan to just cut back pumping, and slowly mix in formula and milk. I bought enfamil newborn.
How much formula vs milk did you do and for how long?
How did your baby react to it?
What will my babies poop look like through the switch? Or what should it look like?
Going to call pediatrician tomorrow but want to know what you mommas did.
My baby is 11 days old.

Re: Pumped milk to formula

  • It's best not to mix breast milk and formula but to feed in separate bottles. Maybe that's what you meant? We had to supplement my first son with some formula while I was at work each day. It wasn't a big deal to switch from one to the other feeding by feeding. He preferred soy formula to milk based formula. It tastes a bit sweeter like breastmilk. He spit it up less often than milk based formula. His diapers were stinkier the more formula he had. I find that breast milk fed babies don't have stinky diapers at all.
I could imagine that exclusively pumping would get old after a while. My extra advice would be- don't cut back on your pumping until you've found a formula that works well with your baby's tummy and you've made sure there aren't any allergies etc. my former boss weaned her son completely to formula, dried up, then found out he was allergic to just about everything and had to feed him neutramogen (very $$$) and it was too late to go back. So just figure that out before you let your supply slip. Then you'll be confident and it will work well. Good luck!

  • My pediatrician was actually the one who told me i could mix breast milk and formula. I quit pumping a week ago. It was too much on me mentally. Lo is 4 weeks today and usually eats 2.5-3oz so I started mixing 2oz breastmilk to 1oz formula. And gradually increased it over about 2 days. That's when I ran out of breastmilk. I noticed he started spitting up so I would feed him half, burp him and feed the rest. When on breastmilk lo pooped a lot! Sometimes a full diaper sometimes just a shart. Now his poops are a little more solid (solid really isn't the right word but no more sharts lol) now it's usually 1-2 per day. And he works a little harder for them. It's been an awesome switch for us!
