Floppy larynx/laryngomalacia

My little guy has had very noisy breathing, sounds almost like he is just really congested, sometimes it gets so bad when he cries that it almost sounds like he can't get a breath in. Our pediatrician said that it is most likely floppy larynx and it is nothing to worry about, however I am a huge worry wart when it comes to my baby. Has anyone had any experience with this or know anything about it that maybe I should know? Or even just some words of encouragement?

My pediatrician said my LO has this as well. She is sending us to a specialist to check her. She said my DD has an overbite as well that could be contributing to the breathing issue. Most likely still a non issue but they may make suggestions for sleeping on stomach vs back as normally recommended.
I'll let you know what we hear next week.

If it affects sleeping and or eating they can also either treat reflux, which helps a lot of the time or do surgery. Or just not treat and they grow out of it

I'm also interested more in seeing what other mamas are doing with it as well

  • My LO doesn't have this, but I work at a daycare and in my 4 years have had 2 babies with this. Both were advised to sleep with a wedge under the mattress for elevation, but otherwise grew out of the condition. Hopefully your little one has the same result. :)
  • My baby has this. Ped said it is normal and she will likely outgrow it in a few months. She is taking Zantac for the acid reflux and sleeping with head elevated. She had been having similar breathing troubles especially when sleeping flat on back and was an incredibly noisy sleeper. She also had frequent hiccups and spit ups. She had started to dislike nursing and get fussy during and after nursing. These are all common symptoms and all have improved with med and elevation.

  • Thank you everyone, I am planning on calling our ped tomorrow to see about something for reflux to see if that helps!
  • My little one has a mild case of this. Ped said to keep her upright for 20 minutes after feedings and use a mattress wedge. Both seem to help.
  • Sounds like my LO has this. He has terrible breathing only at night. I took him to the doctors and they said it could just be a cold but this sounds more of what it could be. I wonder why they didn't think this was an option
  • Mine has it all day long. I would say maybe that is why. We notice it a lot at night because it is so quiet but it is definitely there all day long
