Mega blocks or wooden blocks, cars, little people sets, farm animal figures, a busy book, balls, or a cuddly blanket are all things my DD liked at that age.
My little girl is 16 months now and got the bounce and ride elephant for Christmas when she was only 6 months! It sat around for a good long while but as she grown in proficiency moving and walking it's been great to see her evolve in how she plays with it. Look for toys that can grow with them, if you're going to go the toy route.
Books (especially lift the flap books), clothes, soft rocking horse or other ride on, ball popper, fisher price little people toys, wooden blocks or mega blocks (big legos)
My DD loves the Eric Carle books (hunger catapiller) and you can get s little hand puppet that goes with it. She also loves his animal flash cards! She wants to go through them each night. Books that talk about baby emotions (ex: happy baby, grumpy baby) are good. She likes farm animals now so any toy or book the kiddo can look at and say animal sounds would probably be a hit.
We have a party this sat for good friends little boy who is turning one. They said they don't need anything in particular, so we are just giving them money. Figure they can use it for something practical for him or put it towards his savings for college or whatever. Yes, it's not the most unique gift, but people always love getting money!
Money towards the college fund was very muchh appreciated as we're books and clothes. I really like the board books with flaps that he can manipulate by himself, he's very independent and likes doing things for himself! His favorite book is one that makes a new truck sound for each page when you press the buttons.
I second the toys that grow with the child. Also, don't be afraid to buy a toy that is slightly advanced for the child. Ds is a February baby so after both Christmas and his birthday we put away some of his new toys. It was great to have something new to give him six months down the line when we had a long car trip or when I was bored with his toys! He also loves the t-ball set that I inwardly rolled eyes at when we opened it, he wasn't even walking yet!
My nephew turned one in August and we got him this. It's been a huge hit. We would have gotten him something slightly more advanced for his age if he didn't have a science-y older brother that has lots of hand me downs to send his way.
My only rule for birthdays this year and for the next few coming up is nothing obnoxiously noisy that isn't easy to turn off. I don't want revenge gifts coming our way.
1. Ask the parents if the child needs anything. My DD always had plenty of toys gifted to her, so I rarely got her any myself.
2. Depending on where you live, they might need warm clothes for the fall/winter season. If so, ask the parents what size clothes the child wears. Also, I found with DD that I was always the one buying pajamas for her- friends and family loved to buy her clothes for the daytime, but rarely did she ever get pajamas as a gift. So for my niece's first birthday I got her pajamas, and it was much appreciated.
3. Board books are great too, something developmental like colors, shapes, numbers, etc.
4. Bonus points if you can include a gift receipt :-)
Thanks so much for your ideas, money is probably a no go, university fees are not the same here in Australia, as in the US. Summer clothes are def an option, I adore shopping for clothes, but just wondering if she will get way too many as it is!? Or do newborns mainly get clothes and by 1 that tapers off a bit? I like the idea of books! I could def look for a few classics!
