Pregnant and nursing

While this is my fourth baby it is the first time that I am nursing while knocked up. Anyone else? I've found that my boobs don't hurt like they did during my other pregnancies but my nipples are sooooo raw. I think squish (2) knows something is up because he wants to nurse constantly.

Re: Pregnant and nursing

  • Heyyyyyyy October '13 bumpie! I'm in the same boat. Nipples are raw but no sore boobs (because we are already lactating) and it's a first for me too.. Sore boobs are usually one of my first symptoms so it's really weird. I'm on #4 too :)

  • I'm also pregnant w/ #2 while still nursing #1. My nipples are definitely more sensitive (not unbearably so), but my boobs are not sore at all. I also noticed that my supply seemed to drop in the beginning, but is now picking back up.
  • Holy hell my nipples hurt!! Nursing hurts so much right now. So much that I'm squirming through each session. Luckily DD only nurses when we first wake up, maybe once during the day, and bedtime. My right one is way more sensitive than the left. Are you ladies experiencing that?

    Hormones are weird.

  • Squish might also be going through a growth spurt - or the hormone changes are making you extra delicious (that's just my imagination talking).

Unfortunately no experience, but kudos to nursing pregnant mamas - nursing without being pregnant was tough enough for me!

I hope any discomfort for you all is short lived!

  • I'm still nursing too, and TRYING to wean. My LO just isn't there yet, which is okay. I read that further you get into pregnancy, the less milk you produce and the taste becomes more salty. Something like 8/10 children self wean during this time. Who knows!

I can't believe you have the chicken wang badge still.

  • About 5 weeks and nursing my 16 month old daughter! She's been nursing very frequently as well. I'm not sure if it's the 3 molars and 2 eye teeth coming in at once or that I'm pregnant but my nipples are also VERY sore! I read that since we are already making milk it's normal to not have sore breasts because our bodies don't need to prepare to make milk.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Mild nipple pain here but a massive supply decrease. So upset. DS is 3.5 months and I really wanted to nurse him for at least his first year. I'm hoping for a turn around and that it will pick back up and I can continue to nurse him while keeping both my babies as healthy as possible. I'm going to call his pediatrician to discuss my options and check his stats.

Any other mommies have experience or advice with nursing through their pregnancy? I've been really focusing on drinking as much water as possible to stay hydrated. I've cut out Mothers Milk and Brewers Yeast until instead to my OB (though I do not know how much that helped to begin with.)
  • Oatmeal may help! Also make sure that it's not just a growth spurt coincidentally at the same time you're newly pregnant. I'd pump a lot in the next couple weeks to have a stash for mid pregnancy when milk is supposed to dry up for a couple weeks.
  • I'm still nursing and in so ready to be done so I can have my boobs back for a few months.
  • Thank you @meagkayy4. I do eat oatmeal daily And I hope maybe it's just a growth spurt! He eats every hour and a half so when I pump it's mere drops. The only time I can get anything is when I wake up in the middle of the night (he generally sleeps from 11-6am) and that's usually only about 2-3 oz if I'm lucky which he uses that when I leave the house for work a few hours a day.
  • Is anyone else's doctor telling them to wean? I had my first appointment this morning with the prenatal nurse and she seemed totally shocked when I told her I was still BFing. She said all the doctors at the practice are very adamant about weaning ASAP once you get pregnant again. She also said that because BFing stimulates the uterus, it could cause a miscarriage. I asked her to double check with my doctor and she did and called me a while ago and said that, yes, my doctor is encouraging me to wean. However, from everything else I've read, unless I'm high risk or have a history of losses, I should be ok to continue on. I'm so confused. I don't want to put new baby at risk, but I really want to continue to BF DS until he's at least 1.

I'm not a doctor, but this sounds like a pretty big load of BS. Maybe get a second opinion?

We just had this discussion in one of my Facebook groups. You only need to wean if you are high risk for preterm labor. Pretty much if you're on bed rest and can't have sent then you shouldn't be nursing. It sounds like you need a new provider. I'd try a midwife.

  • My 16 month is still going strong nursing but in the first couple months I remember times where I was sure I wasn't making enough. Just growth spurts though and I pumped even if it was drops coming out. You can try power pumping but I would check with your doctor first because it may be a lot on your body being pregnant. It's 20 min of pumping, 10 off, 10 pumping, 10 off and then another 10 pumping I believe and it helped during growth spurts. I'd do it 2-3 times a day for a couple days and it makes a huge difference in supply.
