Bleeding at 6 weeks - try not to panic!

I wanted to share my story in the hopes that it will help reassure moms that may have to go through a similar experience during their first trimester. I was getting ready for work the other morning when I suddenly felt a big gush come out...I ran to the bathroom praying that it wasn't blood but sure enough there it was...bright red blood (like the start of a heavy period). And it wasn't just a little spotting (because I've heard that's normal) but it was a significant amount. That being said, I didn't have any cramping or pain. Regardless I freaked out and assumed the worst. I called my husband in a panic and told him that he needed to come home because I thought we had lost the baby. Once at the hospital the emerg Doctor did an ultrasound and confirmed that he could still see something in the uterus but couldn't confirm if there was a heartbeat. He referred me to the radiology department where they could get a closer look. The technician performed what felt like the longest ultrasounds in the world. Finally, she turned the screen over to show us what looked like a little flicker on the screen. My husband and I both instantly started crying knowing that what we were seeing was a little heartbeat! We were so incredibly relieved to know that everything was going to be ok. The tech even said that we were fortunate to be able to experience this so early on given that the heart only just started beating this week. The Dr. diagnosed what had happened as a Subchorionic Hematoma, which is basically bleeding within the uterus that is likely caused by a pocket/buildup of blood that got released. He said that this is quite common during the first trimester. In fact, he said that I wouldn't be the last patient of the day to come in with the same experience. So for all the moms out there who may go through this in the future - please don't panic! because chances are you and baby will be ok :)

  • @brinabilodeau this happened to me yesterday. Super scary and I did the same thing. Was able to confirm the baby is fine but was told I need to be on modified bed rest. Is that what your doctor told you as well?

Same thing happened to me around 6 weeks! 8 weeks 3 days now with some old blood spotting. That was the only occasion of red blood thank goodness. They told me to take it easy (no sex, light lifting, rest often) until the subchorionic hemmorage healed it's self. 1cm was the size they gave me. Praying for healthy pregnancies for us!
  • I'm 6 weeks 5 days and had some slight bleeding today but definitely not a lot. Called the nurse and she said to just take it easy. It happened when I had a bowel movement and probably tmi but I have had some bleeding from that past few days so trying to get digestive system. Hoping for the best but already have a ultrasound scheduled for Monday. Plus hubby is out of town this week and have 8 month old so I just don't know if I could handle knowing for sure without him being here.
  • The emerg Dr. didn't really tell me much other than to continue with a healthy lifestyle/diet like I had been doing. I also took a few days off from work but my family Dr. is away for the next 2 weeks so I'm still a little concerned about what I should be doing.
  • The exact same thing happened to me last Tuesday, I was over the moon to see the little heart beat!! All the best x
  • @brinabilodeau. My doctor told me plenty of fluids, lots of rest, no sex, no lifting over 10 pounds and no exercise (besides walking). This is just until this clears up. Which is hopefully in 2 weeks at the next ultrasound.
  • @NikkiSpuhler711 Thanks for the advice!! I'll be sure to take it extra easy for the next few weeks.
  • @brinabilodeau no problem! Hopefully our next ultrasounds are clear and we can go back to normal!
  • Haha I can't do the 10lbs thing (19 lb baby) but the nurse pretty much said same thing
  • I had a subchorionic hematoma with my daughter, bled pretty heavy off and on the whole first trimester. They gave me a 50/50 chance of miscarrying due to the severity. It was terrifying, but she is now a happy 4 year old. Hang in there!
  • I have been bleeding and cramping the last few days but no clotting. Before it started i went on a hike and was intimate with my husband the same day so maybe I just over did it a bit. But I went to the ER and saw the yolk sack on the ultra sound and my hcg was 250. I'm guessing I'm earlier on in the pregnancy but tomorrow I take another hcg test to see if it's doubled. The doctor also diagnosed me with a bladder infection. Praying everything goes well and my hcg is up!
  • @Kelseymann25 I'm hoping for the best for you and baby. Try to hang in there! I know it's hard not to worry. I had a bit of light bleeding again today... It's so worrisome. I went back to the Dr's and he said that its normal to have a little residual bleeding after Monday's ordeal but he said that I should be on bed rest for the next 2 days so that the hematoma can heal. I'm praying that this clears up without anymore complications.
  • Yes rest is the best thing you can give your body right now! Try and relax
  • Hi hun, have you got an update? Xx
  • I've got this situation going on as well right now. It's stressful and I haven't yet been in for an ultrasound to be sure that's what's going on, but I had a similar situation in my first pregnancy that resolved the same way. I think we're all kind of rockstars for functioning while dealing with this stuff.

  • @BlueJuice I'm sorry to hear that you're also going through this. It really IS hard... Not knowing if everything is going to be ok is the worst. Did everything turn out good with your first? How long did you bleed for before it resolved itself?
  • @SunshineJar thanks for checking in :) I saw a dr. again yesterday and he said that my cervix is still closed and there's no tissue which is good. I went in for bloodwork this morning to see if my Hcg levels were going up so I'll have to wait and see. My levels were at 21000 (which i'm told is good/high) on Monday when I saw the emerg dr. so let's hope it's gone up since then. I've also been put on bed rest for the next few days so hopefully that helps with the healing. Sending Healthy vibes to everyone!
  • The same thing happened to me yesterday, I had strong bleeding after intercourse with my husband and freaked out. I also thought that we had lost the baby. But there was no cramping or clots in the blood. We went to see the doctor and had an ultrasound/blood test. Baby is fine, thank god! Seems like it's a common thing to have Subchorionic haemorrhage/ hematoma. Still, it's so scary! Hope for you all that your pregnancies will go well! I'll definitely try to stay calm and rest more.
