HELP! Prenatals make me sick!

I am on my fifth brand of prenatals and they all make me so sick! I have a terrible GI response (severe cramping, nausea, and diarrhea) does anyone know why this would be or what I could do? I'm desperate!

Re: HELP! Prenatals make me sick!

  • Take them at night before bed. Also, have you tried gummies? I have issues with pills with iron but the gummies are fine for me.

  • If you take them in the morning, try them at night-- or vise versa. Also, take them with food if you haven't been. Hope you find a time/way to take them that works for you.
  • I agree - try gummies with food at bedtime! I had this issue last time and my OB eventually said just take Flinstone vitamins haha. Definitely don't do that without checking first though!

  • Do you eat before taking the prenatals? I made the mistake of taking it on an empty stomach once :-&
  • I can't handle the iron in prenatals. I take a slow release iron with a meal and take gummies without iron.
  • My doctor also said just take two Flintstone vitamins a day.
  • I couldn't stomach my prenatals with my first, and my midwives said not to worry about it. Take them again once I was out of the 1st trimester. Now I'm taking gummies and they're better for me. Good luck!
  • I like the 2-a-day gummies. They don't have iron so I'm not as constipated, and I can take one in the morning and one at night to mitigate the nausea. They taste great.

  • I take gummies, and right before bed... but I wanted to just share a word to the wise.  Last time I ended up having to take iron supplements anyway :-/  Which made me feel even worse.

Of course, I'm not learning from my mistakes but I never said I was perfect!

  • I've found that getting "food sourced" prenatals helped me with this. The synthetic kind really bother my stomach, but I can take the food sourced kind on an empty stomach. Try looking at a natural grocer if you have one nearby.
  • Ditto on the food sourced prenatals. Have you tried Rainbow Light brand yet?
  • I also do two flintstones chewables!

  • I realized on day 2 of taking my prenatals that it was making me nauseous. No morning sickness (feeling) prior to. I was about 6 weeks in by the time I started. Needless to say since I've been taking them before bed with a snack, I've felt fine.
  • Agree with everyone else: try the gummies! They have a variety of brands that's not as expensive as say, First Response, and they work fine. I took pills last time and I did fine on them, I just wanted something different lol.
  • I'm so happy you asked this, I had no idea Flinstones were an okay substitute! Picked some up today and immediately felt nostalgic for my childhood :)
  • Mine are special that you can't get at a pharmacy but I get at my OBGYN office through a supplier for higher quality and I have to take one at each meal. That too can make me sick but I found that if I eat half my meal then take it and eat other half it works the best!!!! That way I have found in me and ontop of them. If I take after meal i get sick or before so right in the middle. Try that. Hope it helps!
  • I second rainbow light! Tried two kinds before that and had awful cramping and constipation. So thankful I found them, huge difference for me!
  • I started getting awful ms right when I started taking prenatals and assumed it was just the baby. Then I was going to take them at night instead and discovered I have zero ms, it was all the vitamins! I switched to the CVS brand gummies (bogo!) and they are awesome. Not sick at all and they actually taste good. I'll ask my dr about the iron though, because as mentioned previously, they don't have iron in them. But until she tells me otherwise, that's what I'm taking. :)
