Milk Protein Allergy

I noticed about two weeks ago that my LO's bowel movements have been green. They started bright green and steadily became a dark green. About a week ago i noticed small amounts of blood in his stool. My pediatrician wanted us to watch his diapers over the weekend and see if the blood continues and it did. I had to bring in a diaper on Monday and they confirmed it was blood. Now they are saying he is most likely allergic to the proteins in cows milk and i have to cut all dairy out of my diet while i breastfeed. Has this happened to anyone else? Do i just cut milk, cheese, yogurt, butter and the obvious stuff or do i have to go all crazy and read labels on everything like bread and stuff? Anyone with advise and experience with this is much appreciated.

Re: Milk Protein Allergy

  • DD had green bowel movements, but they never had blood. My lactation consultant advised that I start with just cutting milk and if that didn't make any difference then to cut yogurt, ice cream, and cheese. She said that the dairy protein can stay in my system for up to two weeks so it could take some time to see a change. After cutting just milk from my diet LO no loger had green poo within a week. I think she just had a mild allergy though so you may have to cut more.

  • I've had to cut all dairy (and soy) out of my diet and LO still was having problems. Reflux, refusing feeds etc...I just started her on Nutramigen formula (and im pumping to see if she can take BM later) she didn't have the blood in stool (yet) but my son has that as a baby so I've been down this road already. Try cutting it all out then if it all clears up reintroduce some things slowly.
  • I am actually going through this now... my son is on neosure as he was a preemie and first started with constipation that has now turned to very dark green stools that are loose with no 'seed-like' texture, very liquid and i can't tell if there is mucous or not yet but it appears that is what the liquid substance might be. He is also miserable screaming and grunting/straining most of the day and night. :( trying alimentum this week to see if it helps!

  • We're dealing with the same thing! My babe was super "colicky" from week 2 onwards and had awful acid reflux and so much tummy crunching gas! All he did was cry. I was trying everything, but nothing helped. He was eating and gaining weight so my doctor showed no concern which was the most frustrating thing. I was told he will just grow out of it. Well watching your baby in pain is excruciating!! I stopped dairy regardless of her opinion and it made a huge difference!! He was content, had less gas, stopped the back arching screaming, and stopped spitting up constantly.... Until last week. He's back to crying all evening/morning and he's had a good week of dark green mucousy poop-at least 6 times a day. I am now wondering if he's got an intolerance to something else or if I'm not cutting dairy out enough (I still eat breads etc that may contain dairy). I'm struggling with eliminating foods. I'm exclusively BF'ing and don't have lots of down time to prepare special snacks and meals, dairy and soy are in everything!
  • Also ensure that you do not have an oversupply problem.  Foremilk has much more lactose in it than hindmilk.  If LO is getting more foremilk thank s/he should, LO can develop a lactose intolerance too.  This causes bloody stools.

It's easier to relieve an oversupply issue than it is to eliminate dairy from your diet.  Do you think it may be oversupply?  (Are you leaking milk when LO is not actively sucking?  Do you have forceful letdown?)

I'm no expert, but I bet oversupply is wayy more common than a dairy allergy, and is much easier to fix.

This happened to us exactly. Only cutting actual milk solved it. I have still been able to have other dairy products without my son being affected.
