Heart murmur

Our little one is finally here!! After an emergency c section Colin made his entrance into the world on Oct 3rd (4 days over due) at 8:20pm. He looks so perfect!! At the hospital still and this morning after the nurses took him down to the nursery to see the pediatrician they bring him back (about 9am) and tell us he has a heart murmur. They tell me they ordered an Echo and are waiting for results to come in before the pediatrician comes to talk to us about it. Well it is now 9pm and still no word. Every time a nurse comes in to check vitals I ask about results and they tell me they will check. They leave the room and return shortly to tell me the results are not in yet. I'm getting really frustrated. I just want to be told something!! How could it take this long to get results?!

Re: Heart murmur

  • Congratulations, he's adorable! My little guy also had a heart murmur when he was born but it cleared on its own before we left the hospital. Hopefully you get the results soon and it's good news.

  • My DS1 had an innocent murmur that came and went as he grew. I hope that you get the results back quickly

  • I'm not sure about a murmur but LO had an arrhythmia when before and after she was born, it sounded like her heart skipped a beat (actually an extra beat) it went away by her first appointment. I always wonder if it was caused by the small deposit they found in her heart.
  • All though I have no experience with babies or small children with heart murmurs, I can tell you I have had a heart murmur my whole life. It has never been an issue or concern, just something my GP listens to when I have a check up.
Hopefully you get your results soon, the waiting is probably the worst part!
  • I don't mean this to scare you but just to know my experience. My DS3 was born about 4 weeks ago. They heard a murmur. It was re checked after 24 hours of life which is usually when they go away. His was louder. They ordered an echo and found out his pulmonary valve is too small and he has a hole between the lower 2 chambers. We had a pediatric cardiologist appt the day we got discharged. Went and found out our son has Tetralogy of Fallot. His pulmonary valve is 1/3 the size it should be and he has tissue growing shut around the valve and the hole in the lower chambers. We've had weekly cardiologist appt for them to keep an eye on the tissue growth and his oxygen. So far it's been ok but last week oxygen dropped from 99% to 95%. Only way to fix this is open heart surgery which he will likely have according to the cardiologist and surgeon we met with this month sometime. They just want him bigger if they can. We actually have a cardiologist appt this morning. Will keep you and your LO in my thoughts and prayers. Sending hugs your way.
  • My 9yo niece had a heart murmur and outgrow it. She's fine now - in fact she just rocked her gymnastics competition on Sunday! I hope you get your results soon.

@cathieh, keeping you and your LO in my prayers! Hopefully your cardiology appointment will go well today.
  • Heart murmurs are incredibly common in babies and in fact most will have one at one time or another. They are usually innocent and will resolve on their own. Hope you get some answers soon.
