Out of milk... Hungry baby

So I'm out of milk.... Since birth my appetite has been zero and whenever I pump I get nauseas, so I know I'm not getting enough nutrients to produce enough milk. I had so much milk in the beginning but I just ran out of milk in the freezer barely anything is coming out when I pump. I just tried to give her a formula bottle bc she has to eat something but she hated it... Feeling awful... Choking down some oatmeal, pumping all the time ugh milk where did you go? Please come back soon!

Re: Out of milk... Hungry baby

  • Can you offer baby your breast instead of pumping? Baby is more efficient at getting milk then the pump. Do you feel full and it isn't coming out? Maybe try some massaging to help release the milk if that is the case. Good luck!

  • Force yourself to eat. I had a day with low supply and it broke my heart when I ran out and she was still hungry. That day I know I didn't drink or eat enough, so I've made a conscious effort ever since to get enough nutrition.

I make myself eat 3 meals a day, I have been trying to eat foods that boost milk supply (not just oatmeal) and add a tbs of flax and Brewers yeast to breakfast. I've also been forcing myself to drink at least 2 liters of water a day. It is work, but I have been able to feed her and pump a little extra.

Just remember it's not just you you're feeding, so even if you aren't hungry, get on a schedule and remember to eat!
  • I feel nauseous every time I nurse, pump, or milk lets down. It was the same way when I nursed my daughter for a year. I'm pretty sure it's from the hormones that are released while nursing but it made it difficult for me to eat. I cannot eat while nursing or for about a half hour after im done. Gatorade and oatmeal help my supply this time but neither of them increased my supply with my daughter. I drank mothers milk tea and took the mother love supplements and they both worked.

  • I would find snacks that are easy to grab-n-go so it's not a lot of work to eat. I'm a big fan of the yogurt with granola, bananas, pre-packaged salads, ThinkThin bars, and string cheese are just some suggestions.
  • I'm eating a lot of cereal, cheese/crackers and milk/cookies. I figure eating SOMETHING is better than nothing, even if it's not very healthy. I'm losing a lot of weight though, so I tried to buy healthier options for this week.

  • I made a batch of lactation cookies and they have helped! There are a tons of recipes online, but they all have brewer's yeast, flaxseed meal, and oatmeal. I added chocolate chips and caramel chips to make mine better-- not super healthy, but they have boosted my supply and they are filling because of the oatmeal!!
I found the yeast at a local whole foods store and the flax seed meal at Kroger!
