Contraction timing

Oh my goodness I am THAT person but just curious I've heard contractions need to last for a minute every 5 minutes for an hour... What if all consistent contractions are only 35 seconds average?

My doctor said she doesn't care about the length of each contraction but if it's 5 minutes from the start of one to the start of the next for an hour, then it's time to go in. Not sure if that helps. Good luck!

  • The hospital tried to tell me I wasn't in labor because my contractions didn't last a full minute, just about 40 seconds. They recommended not coming in. I went in anyway and was an 8 when I arrived.
  • Thanks, ladies! I'm exhausted. Trying to labor at home as long as possible. Definitely don't wanna spend unnecessary time in the hospital feeling nervous. Home is comforting!
  • Call your doctor or midwife to ask. Mine said 3 mins apart for 45 secs, I guess different places have different rules so best to check what yours is.
  • Yes, definitely call. With DD1 they told me to wait another hour even with them 3-5 mins apart. Got there and couldn't be admitted because I still hadn't made enough progress. I ended up walking another 2 hours before they'd admit me.
