Night sweats-very concerned

Hi everyone! I haven't posted in a long time but used to be very active up until my DS was about 2...

He is now 4 and I have a health concern and I'm going crazy worrying.

DS has for as long as I can remember sweated at night when he first falls asleep. Not a clothes or bed drenching sweat...just enough to wet his hairline and make a sweat mark on his pillow. The sweat seems to just be coming from his head. He's always done this and my husband has always said it's probably just because he's sleeping so hard...he sleeps REALLY hard and won't take naps so he literally crashes out when it's been time.

I mentioned this sweating thing to my best friend who's a nurse last night just out of curiosity to see if her daughter did the same and she said no and she seemed very concerned and asked me to make an appointment to take him to the doctor for it. Another weird thing is his temp drops way down to 96 when he sweats ljke this...but after about two hours after falling asleep he's not sweating anymore and his temp rises up to 97.8-98 or so.

Of course I googled and completely freaked myself out!! Apparently night sweats can mean cancer...diabetes...and other scary things!!:( I'm just so worried and of course our pedi is closed for the holiday weekend and won't be open again until Tuesday. Can someone relate to these weird symptoms? Anyone else's kid sweat at night?

Re: Night sweats-very concerned

  • Hmmm. One of mine sweats a lot but it's most noticeable whenever he was napping. For instance if he fell asleep in the car seat he sweated like crazy, even if it wasn't hot (I know car seats can be warm, but that much sweat seemed unjustified). He has also sweated when napping in his bed or on the couch. As far as overnight sleep, I haven't noticed it being a frequent thing, or it could only be happening during a time when I am not checking and has faded long before morning. He is 4.5 years old. I have never taken his temperature when it happens. I think he sweats on his trunk, too. This has been going on for well over a year, probably 2. I never really googled it. He has autism and has sleep issues so in our case I thought it might be related to that. My son sleeps really hard, too -- sort of. When he is out he is OUT but if it's time to wake up there's nothing you can do. He'll be wide awake. I'm sorry you're so worried... I don't know what to say. I haven't really worried about it for some reason (usually I worry about everything).

We had thought about doing a sleep study at one point but that sounds like a total nightmare. After the 23 hour EEG we did for autism, well I never wanted to do anything like that again. Of course I would if a doctor told me to or I noticed something else concerning, but the discussion about sweating never really led anywhere. It seems like we always had more pressing concerns given the ASD).

  • If he's always done this he'll probably be ok over the weekend. Mine I've noticed sweats from time to time. I think it could be all the pillows and he sleeps face down and drools sometimes. Nothing I'd worry about. Maybe call the nurse on Tuesday and ask the dr if they think he should come in. Does he sleep with a lot of blankets & pillows? Maybe those make him sweat? Do you have a ceiling fan in the room? It might help.

  • Something a doctor told me helped a lot...symptoms will show themselves if it's serious. It will probably make you feel better to ask your doctor, but if you think about it, if there was an underlying cause like diabetes or cancer, they would likely not just sweat while sleeping. Neither of those conditions go away, so sleeping vs awake would make no difference. My son runs very warm...warm hands and feet and will sweat near his hairline too. I hope this makes you feel better until you can get an appointment! Best of luck!

  • I always sweated a ton while sleeping as a kid - to the point that my parents were concerned. I actually would wake up drenched most nights till I was around 26 and started taking prenatal vitamins. I have no idea why it changed, but I rarely (like a handful of times a year) wake up drenched anymore. I'd been on all sorts of different vitamins of course throughout those 26 years off and on, and I don't remember them ever making a difference.

I also have autimmune thyroid disease and started on thyroid hormone about 3-4 months after that, but the night sweats had already stopped. Its certainly worth talking to the doctor, but I don't think I have any crazy diseases :) My daughter also sweats a lot while sleeping but usually if it is even slightly warm in her room. She just gets overheated easily while sleeping.
