Decisions decisions!

So my husband and I have decided on a name for our baby boy but are 90% sure we will be calling him by a shortened version of his middle name instead. Middle name William and we'd like him to be called Will. His first name is my husband's. Has anyone ever done this and regretted just not calling him his given name? Or just giving him the name you'll be calling him? So worried we will make the wrong choice either way! I have two other sons and we gave them the name we call them and never have wanted it shortened or different. Ahhhh! Help!

Re: Decisions decisions!

  • I think it's perfectly normal to go by a middle name or shortened middle when the first name is the father's name as well! I wouldn't worry about it at all!!

  • My dad goes by his middle name. Its quite handy as they get older. When people call the house looking for "First Name" we know they aren't friends. :)

  • My husband goes by his middle name. I will say that there have been several issues with things being put under my husband's name that was supposed to have been his dad's, since they have the same first name. Don't know how common of an issue it is, but it's been a major hassle for us having things taken off his credit report.
  • Thanks ladies!

My husbands grandfather and father shared the same first name. They had bills and even medical information mixed up because of their name. It may not happen a lot but it can.
  • I see no problem as long as it's one of the baby's given names. I go by a nickname not even close to my given names so it's always awkward when someone calls out my legal name and I have to correct them. Or then they want to know how I ended up with the nickname!

And as @jojospudnick mentioned, if the names are similar between baby and father it can get things mixed up. My husband is Joseph Ryan and his father is Joseph Donald and somehow DH ended up with a credit card on his credit report that's older than he is (because it's his dad's). But things like that are generally fixable without too much trouble.
  • I know a family that the son goes by his middle name because he is a Junior. It has worked out wonderfully for their family (the son is now 55) and everyone knows the difference between them.
My brother is a junior and both him and my dad go by Richard or some form of it and it can be incredibly confusing. My brother has a nickname that he usually goes by at home but when a school friend would call for Rich or now as an adult if a company calls for Richard we never know which one they want. Sometimes I wish my brother went by his middle name lol
  • We named our son after my husbands first name and call him by his middle. I'm glad we did
  • My husband goes by an shortened version of his middle name.. I have thought about doing this when our little boy arrives.. His name will be River McCoy.. and I want to call him Coy..
So I like the idea of using a short version of the middle name..
  • Love that @jcole14! We are on the same wave length. Makes me not feel crazy for wanting to go this!
