Being induced due to high blood pressure

I'm 37 weeks and my BP has been high 140/90-146/92 for the past 4 days. My doctor is having me come in to have my BP checked every day and wants to induce me if it doesn't go down by Wednesday. I'm not dilated at all and feeling very rushed. I had planned an all natural birth and this ruins things. The baby isn't ready or id be in labor. Does anyone have experience with being induced?

Re: Being induced due to high blood pressure

  • I was induced for the same reason at 39 weeks. With your BP high like that, it's safer to deliver as BP could easily turn to pre-e. Would your doctor be willing to wait until you are a little farther along? I was on modified bed rest from about 37 weeks until I was induced. My induction went really well. I was in labor about 26 hours. They gave me a gel on my cervix that softened it and started contractions and they did a little pitocin later on to keep them up but I didn't need much help to get it started. Good luck!

  • Try cutting out all the salt in your diet, no soda/caffeinated beverages, and drinks TONS of water.

Also, when you take your BP, make sure your feet are flat to the floor, not crossed, and your sitting up straight, and try to relax.

I was induced with DD because of high blood pressure. No matter what, it'll be okay.

My first pregnancy I had high BP. I delivered after they found protien in urine and pee-eclampsia.
Baby and I were at risk Of horrible things.

I delivered at 36 weeks and baby was small and stayed in NICU for 2 weeks.

U have the advantage that your baby is 37 weeks (full term).
if your BP remains high , trust your Dr and deliver early. I was able to deliver my baby without a section but I was warned that it may come to that.
Good luck mama. I hope you and baby are well.
  • I was having similar spikes. It ended up being preenclampsia. Blood pressure this high is dangerous to our little ones. I'm sorry that this isn't the delivery you were wanting but if it goes further, preenclampsia is dangerous. I question my doctors as much as the next person, but when it comes to blood pressure, I do not play around. I went from having a c-section scheduled for October 1st to going in to my regular appointment on 9/23 and them moving my c-section up to 9/25. I will say holding my little guy is worth everything. I'm still healing, but I'd do it again just to keep him healthy.
  • I don't have any experience with this but I am being induced tonight for the same reason. I'm 39 weeks but baby is very comfortable where she is and I think I'd go past 40 weeks if we weren't inducing which makes me a little nervous that it is going to work. Anyway, good luck!
  • I'm currently in the hospital for protein in my urine and elevated blood pressure. I'll be 38 weeks tomorrow. I was planning an all natural birth (and VBAC) and this has me very upset. So I feel your pain. Hope all goes well.
  • I was induced for hypertension at 37 weeks, my OB likes to get LO out at 37 weeks when there are BP issues.

My last pregnancy I was not induced as my BP was right on the border.  When I went into labor I was diagnosed with full blown severe Pre-E and needed a magnesium drip.  I would choose induction over that experience again in a heartbeat, my recovery and labor with my second were a million times better than with the drip.  I hated staying in bed that whole time, the bleeding and clotting were worse because I couldn't get up and move around.  I also spent my first 24 hours with my son completely drugged up.  I didn't even realize how much I missed out on with him until I had my second and was clearheaded and capable of really taking care of him almost directly after I gave birth.  I was able to have a successful vaginal delivery and avoid pitocin as well.

I know induction is scary and I would never induce for non-medical reasons but BP issues can turn serious quickly.
  • I have been on a roller coaster with my BP for about a month. We have an induction date set for Oct.13th (5 days before EDD) I will be 39w2d when we go into the hospital next Tuesday night. My doctor said she doesn't believe that induction increases risk of C-section but every doctor is different and I trust her. I did the tests to check for Pre-E and all test came back negative, but just to be safe she advised we get the ball rolling on the 13th. I am so ready for our baby boy to be here, but I was REALLY praying he would just come out on his own.

This happened to me. I went to my 39 week appointment and had high blood pressure (sudden onset) and protein in urine. My ob sent me to the hospital immediately for further tests and it ended up being pre eclampsia. Totlly rushed and unprepared but It's better to get baby out at that point. They didn't wait at all to start the cervidil which took 12 hours. I started having contractions but when they checked me after 12 hour I was still only 1cm dilated and 60% effected (no change). I had to do another round of cervidil, but at the 4 hour mark, my ob came and broke my water and that really got things going. I Labored for 10 more hours and my daughter was born vaginally (vacuum assisted due to dropping heart rate, her cord was wrapped around her neck). But I did this all without any pain medication or epidural. It is possible. Remember that the ultimate goal is a healthy mom and baby. Good luck.
  • I have no personal experience with this and I'm sorry you are dealing with this. I know you have a plan and would like to follow it but this is one time in our lives where we really have little control over the process. As long as you and baby are both healthy that's all that matters. Best of luck!

I just got back from my appointment and my BP was slightly elevated (134/90) so they did bloodwork. I'll find out tonight if I need to do the 24 hour urine catch. Reallllly hoping it's not pre-e.
