Anyone else not dilated despite contractions or cramps?

I'm only 36 weeks and 4 days and my doctor told me today that I have not dilated at all despite cramps or contractions. He told me he would check me next week again and if no progression, then he would do a sonogram to see if the baby was flipped. Could be that my due date is off he said. I am measuring 35 weeks, but its highly unlikely and he expects me to go over my 40 week mark. This is my first baby and I have no clue as to how fast you can dilate or how fast labor progresses. Anybody else been in this situation? I just feel so exhausted and the thought of going over 40 weeks makes me feel so overwhelmed. I want my baby to be healthy and strong, but I feel like he's going to graduate college in there!

  • I am 39 weeks +2 days. At my 38 week check up I was not dilated at all but lots of cramps and contractions. Doctor said it is completely normal to have nothing going on at 38wks as far as dilation.

  • With my first I was only 1cm at my 39 week appointment and my water broke at 39w6d.  You still have almost a month, a ton can happen!  Also you can go from 1 to 10 cm pretty quickly or stay at 3 or 4 cm for weeks.  The cervical checks don't mean that much, which is why some people avoid them.

  • I'm 40 + 2 and everything is locked up nice and tight. No dilation and no effacement but baby is head down and low. I know it doesn't really mean anything but it is frustrating. The doc wants to do a membrane sweep to try to get her started before we have to induce (I can't go past 41 weeks due to medical reasons)  and she can't because I'm sealed tight. Just hang in there.
  • At my appointment today they told me I was just under 1 cm dilated and 70 percent effaced. I'm 38 weeks. Also I've been having contractions since 33 weeks, they had to put me on medication to stop them.
  • I wasn't effaced or dilated at all 2 days before my water broke with DS. That's why I haven't even asked the OB to check. He was born at 37 & 2.
  • I'm 40 + 1 and also not dilated yet. Baby looked great at my NST today so he is in no rush but I'm SO ready to meet him.

I'm 37w3d and nothing yet but a little effacing. (Hooray for 20 days or less!) I see my OB tomorrow so we will see if that's changed. It'd be kind of nice if I start cuz I am sick of these contractions that aren't going anywhere. I'm not trying to naturally induce or anything but its hard to wait when you are so uncomfortable!

  • Thanks! This makes me feel better. I'm so happy about the baby and like I said I want him to be healthy, but this is extremely uncomfortable! Not to mention, I have this silly rash that nothing seems to help. Its supposed to go away after delivery so of course that makes the days drag. I'm also looking at all this baby stuff and getting antsy about meeting him lol I love my OB but he made it out to be a bad thing, or that's how I took it. I definitely wouldn't try to naturally induce myself either. I think I can take the suffering a little bit longer then to risk potentially hurting my baby I've carried for nearly nine months!
  • Ive been having contractions and my doctor can feel baby's head but no dilating. He just refuses to come out :/
  • 40 weeks today and have been having contractions and cramps for a good three or four weeks now.
Still sealed up nice and tight. No progression as far as dilation or effacement. My last appointment the doc told me all the contractions were getting baby in the proper position and low in the pelvis.
It's all good though. Baby will come when baby is ready. We are in no rush over here.
  • 39 weeks have had a few contractions but have been 75% effaced and baby has been at station -1 since week 36 but barely 1 cm dilated .
