Recliner vs. Ottoman

I want to get a comfy glider this time around since I ended up spending a lot of time in my cheap one with DS.  What I can't decide between is whether to get a reclining one or one with an ottoman.  Opinions? :)

Re: Recliner vs. Ottoman

  • Ottoman that glides IMO. I like the way it moves with the glider and that I can adjust it closer or further based on how much I want to slouch down into the chair

  • Ottoman that glides.
  • I have always felt awkward using an ottoman that rocks with the chair. I could never find the right distance from the chair where my legs would feel comfy. We're going with a recliner.

  • Just keep in mind with a recliner you won't be able to have your feet up and rock at the same time. I'd also bet that you won't use it nearly as much as you did with your first ;-) but having had both I vote recliner- very comfy!
  • Ottomans get in the way. Recliner saves space.
  • Pros and cons to both. My DH and I were talking about it last night. We have a recliner we love. There have been a couple times when LO's been sick and wouldn't let me put him down that I slept in it and was thankful for the reclining feature. That being said it would be nice to have my feet up and rock. I think the more important feature that we've decided we can't live without is it being really wide... and comfy!
  • Both! We got a recliner that glides and and ottoman to go with it!
  • I was sure I was going to get a recliner but in the end there were two key reasons I decided to go with glider + glider ottoman. 1) a recliner will no longer glide while in the reclining position. 2) I couldn't find a recliner that I could easily return to gliding position. I'm pretty short and feel like I always have to lean pretty far forward and apply a lot of pressure to the foot rest to get it to go down. I figured I'd hate it if I had a sleeping baby in my arms and that it would be near impossible if I end up recovering from a c-section. There are power options, but they cost even more.
In the end we were able to reconfigure the floor plan to allow for an ottoman. I've already fallen asleep in it a few times.
  • We went recliner as I worried with twins about being able to stand up from the chair and push an ottoman out of the way.  So the push down feature of the recliner appealed to me in that regard.

  • Thanks for the input everyone!  I think I decided that I'm going to just get a stationary ottoman or floor poof so that it's light and can easily be kicked out of the way when I want to get up.

This is a great point. I broke my tailbone and it's still healing and I can't get out of my recliner comfortably because it requires too much force on my backside.
  • We have a recliner that we bought for one major reason. I'm 5'9" and my husband is 6'6". Gliders just do not fit us comfortably with the back height. We LOVED our recliner so much with our first that we bought a second one for the nursery for baby #2. Then we found out we were having twins and we are so happy we did. We did frozen embryo transfers from a donor egg IVF with our son. So, we knew we would be getting pregnant and decided to invest right before starting the cycles. When we found out it was twins, we were so happy we did it.

I have lots of friends that love their gliders. For us, it wouldn't have been great bc my son had reflux and rocking & sitting up made it worse. We spent .most nights in the recliner sleeping (he'd sleep okay in the rock n play for the first 4ish hours and then after his midnight feed, he wouldn't be able to go back to sleep). He is also still not a great sleeper at 2, but we stopped sleeping in the recliner with him when he was 9-10 months unless hr had reflux issues.

Basically, its whatever works for you. I never slept anywhere but a bed (I have sleep anxiety and insomnia and just can't sleep anywhere but a bed), so the recliner was a good alternative. Luckily, there is no wrong answer ;)
