how much clothing for a newborn?

How much does a baby go through in a day?

We were given two big bags of hand me downs, stuff at the shower and of course I couldn't resist buying cute little outfits myself.

We have 23 sleepers
27 onsies
11 pairs of pants (the soft legging kind)

And then 3 pairs of jeans and several t shirt styled onesies and a couple of little hoodies.

We also have a few sweaters and an outerwear bundling up thing.

This seems like SO much. Plus it's all newborn or 0-3 month and we have almost nothing that's bigger.

Do you put the baby in the onesie and a sleeper?

I'm a little lost and am just feeling overwhelmed by the number of things we have. Everything has been washed and folded and now that it's put away it seems like so much.

  • For the first several weeks we definitely probably did 3 or 4 outfits a day. Most of the time it was just sleepers or onesies with soft pants. Once breastfeeding got more comfortable, spitting up got more manageable, and pooping calmed down some you don't need as much but I'd say you are pretty set! I probably have that much too and having extra isn't bad. I consign twice a year to make extra cash so the stuff I don't care about much moves out of the house quickly as baby grows :)

  • DD was a May baby...so she was little for the summer, and spent much of the time in onesies, or footed PJs, because it was so warm.

DS is a Fall baby, so I'm sure it will be a little different. I have some "gowns" for easy diaper changes, lots of onesies and fitted pjs/sleep n plays. And that is pretty much all I will put my baby in till they are at least 3+ months.

DD is 4, and we've just started wearing "real" jeans in the last year, but she hates them most of the time. They are uncomfortable, stiff and never fit right, and honestly, I think they look silly on babies.

    Stick to comfortable, and cotton.

  • You'll be surprised how much clothing you go through! Depending if you use swaddle blankets or what you do for sleep you might use both a onesie and a sleeper but most the time you'll just use a sleeper
  • I would say 3-4 outfits a day sounds right. It was hot here with both my September babies, so we would do a onesie and swaddle during the day, and at night a footie because I keep the air on. Just pay attention to what baby is telling you as far as the layers go. Once my girls were able to get out of a swaddle, they did, so I kind of figured they were hot and liked it in just a onesie. They seemed most comfy with their legs out.

  • I think it depends on where you live but even then I don't think you need a ton of stuff. My son was born in December in NYC so I actually didn't need a lot of real clothes, just onesies and pajamas. He stayed relatively clean during the day so I only really changed his clothes maybe twice a day. Since we were in the house most of the time he wore onesies, knit pants and socks and if we went out he had an outerwear piece he would wear. As far as real clothes he only had a few outfits that could easily be repeated as long as I didn't take lots of pictures lol. If anything what you have sounds good bc you won't have to wash clothes every day.... I had at least 2 weeks worth of socks, onsies, and pjs because I HATE doing laundry and I hate folding even more lol. I don't know if it's a ton per se but it's a good start and depending on your lifestyle you'll start to layer in what you actually need and give away what you find excessive.
  • I think you're set! Don't worry about it being excessive. I somehow ended up with way more than I intended too, but I just folded and organized it all and am so relieved that I have everything ready now.
