acupuncture..what's it like

Looking into starting acupuncture but have no idea what it's like. I know it's lots of needles which doesn't bother me but what is a typical appointment like.  Do they just put needles in and take them out? Do you lie there a while? DO they do other stuff?

Thanks

Re: acupuncture..what's it like

  • I've done a bit of acupuncture. They put the needles in and you lay there for 10-15 mins and then they twist them and you lay there for another 10-15 mins. Then that's it. Doesn't hurt, I had a few zing moments where it felt like electricity...I would recommend staying very still. I bent my leg and it hurt so badly!

  • I usually try to meditate -- or I fall asleep -- while the needles are in.  It's pretty relaxing.  As long as you don't move too much as @junicek suggested.  :)

  • Oh man. I don't know if I can lie still that long but many people have recommended acupuncture to me.
      • TTC #1 since August 2014
      • currently on 5th medicated IUI cycle
  • I did have a nap when I went later in the day...but the last time I went it was mid-morning.
  • I second what everyone said.  They stick the needles in and I lay there for 15-20 minutes.  I am going an acupuncturist recommend by my RE.  She actually puts on some meditation for fertility.  It talks in a soothing voice about washing away nasty words and replacing then with good words.  I like that much better than back-ground noise (an acupuncturist I have been to use just uses white noise, like birds or water).  With white noise, I just think of things of could be doing.  It's was not very relaxing.  I liked the fertility meditation stuff because I would focus on her words and relax more.

My acupuncture practitioner usually comes in the room and talks with me for about ten minutes reviewing how I have been feeling and issues that have come up for me in the previous week (ie poor sleep , nausea , anxiety , headaches etc) . She then takes my pulse and looks at my tongue and determine what points she needs to stimulate that day . She then places the needles that don't hurt all over my body usually . She then leaves the room for the remaining 45 to 50 minutes but checks on me halfway through to see if any needles need to be adjusted . I sometimes sleep but mostly meditate because I don't want to fall asleep and move and mess up a needle . I find that it is really hard to relax the first couple times (I am an anxious person ) but it has been good practice for me . The best meditation sessions I have had have been during acupuncture . I highly recommend as it has significantly reduced my anxiety in this whole process . Good luck !!!

  • I feel like I read (maybe the making babies book?) about positive research with IVF and acupuncture, anyone know if they have shown increased success rates for IUI?
  • I have been doing acupuncture since the beginning of my successful cycle (I don't think that's what made it work, but it certainly has helped me relax). My experience is most similar to @mskeenan. He asks me how I've been doing, and while I was cycling, he would ask for follie size, lining and hormone levels. He also took my pulse (as an aside, he was the first one to suggest I was pregnant from my pulse as it was very 'energetic'...although I felt SO tired). Then needles go in, and I lay for 40-45 min, with him coming to check on me halfway through. I've fallen asleep a number of times, but not recently for some reason (different room which is not as dark I think). I've enjoyed it (even though DH says it's a waste a money), but am considering cutting back now.

There is definite research on it helping with IVF, less so with IUI. I think because there's more research done with IVF than IUI to begin with.
  • How often do you go for treatments?
  • I went twice a week from the beginning of of my cycle to end of week 6 I believe. After my first U/S at 7w, I've been at once/week.
  • I've been going 1X per week even though they recommended 2x a week . I couldn't afford 150 a week just on acupuncture . Although I may go twice a week during my IVF cycle . Not sure yet

  • My experience has also been the most similar to @mskeenan. I'm in the middle of my first iui cycle. I went last week the night before my iui. I had a little trouble relaxing because I was so curious about the needles. I kept trying to examine them. I went back again today (6 days post iui). It was a completely different experience. I was no longer curious and I was able to actually fall asleep with them in. It was incredible relaxing! I am planning on trying to go back once a week.
