2nd Trimester

3D Ultrasound, yay or nay?

So my husband and I are debating on getting a 3D ultrasound. We have no specific reason, just would love to see that little face. Our local place charges $75 and we're trying to save every last penny for when the baby is born and I can't work anymore. So what do you ladies think? Is it worth it?

  • Save your money.
  • I personally think they're creepy and weird. Probably just me.
  • I think they're kind of cool tbh but I'm not going to have one because they're not medically necessary and I can think of better things to spend money on.

  • The surprise and genuine first glance at your little one is worth skipping the ultrasound. Save your money!
  • i personally want to do it, but if you need to save the money then definitely skip out on it.
  • Thank you ladies. You confirmed what I've been feeling. The only reason I was seriously considering it is I've heard so many stories of ultrasound techs are only 50% sure it's a girl or boy and the 3D would be good way to know for sure.

We got a 3d ultrasound done at 18w when we found out the gender. It was awesome. But, it was free. I thought every woman gets one free 3D ultrasound? Anyways, if we had to pay we wouldn't have. It was cool, but they kind of look like aliens, and he wouldn't hold still, so he looked similar to a turtle in most of them.
  • I got one done. Hubby and I were too excited and couldn't wait. We paid $60. It was worth it for me.
  • Like others said, I find them fairly creepy but I know some people really like having them done

I have never heard this low of a percentage when it comes to finding out the sex. We are blessed with one of each this pregnancy and there is a very noticeable difference between the two. If you have your anatomy scan done around 18-20 weeks and the lo cooperates, you should be able to find out the sex then (after all of the important things are looked at first during the scan).
  • I had a few done in my last pregnancy because I needed extra ultrasounds to check on baby in the 3rd try and the tech would flip on the 3d just for fun for a minute or two. We never got a very good image. If the baby is facing the placenta or a multitude of other positions they won't be able to get a good image. Some people do end up with good images but it's no guarantee. Also the later you can wait to do it the better because they will have some fat on their little faces and not look so skinny and alien like.

  • In my opinion, absolutely nay. Save your money, while it can be pretty cool to see your LO more before s/he makes her/his debut, it's not worth almost $100 and unneeded exposure to your growing LO. I have to have weekly normal U/S's due to being pre-eclamptic and I wish I didn't.
Ultimately it's your decision and no stranger on the internet can sway you either way. I wish you the best in whatever path you choose!
  • Both of my good friends (who have had babies in the last year) said to not schedule the 3D, but go to a place you know offers it. In their cases, the tech was more than happy to 'flip the switch' and turn on the 3D with no extra charge.

A 50% accuracy rate means they're no better than flipping a coin, OP. I assure you, that is not the case. Where did you get that information? If you've been reading threads about the Ramzi method that's a completely different situation.
  • Yea, unless it's genuinely too early to tell (before 14 weeks) a good ultrasound tech should be able to determine the sex.

Personally, I am not a fan of ultrasounds for 'funsies' and think you should save your money. We wound up needed an extra scan during 3rd tri and the tech switched it over to 3D, but he just looked like a creepy glob. MUCH cuter when he actually came out. ;)

This is not entirely true, as it depends if they can get a good shot and how the baby is positioned, at 20 weeks I was was told I'm "most likely" having a girl, but her legs were crossed and she was facing away, and rather uncooperatively, wouldn't move! Haha! But a 50/50 chance with no guess seems unusual, that's for sure.
  • We plan on doing one, only because hubby's work schedule is preventing him from going to any of our appointments so he hasn't seen any ultrasounds (other than still pictures) or even heard the heartbeat. The 3D is at a private clinic so we can book it for a weekend when he isn't working. If he could go to another appointment we probably wouldn't bother.
  • We had one done at 18w2d to determine the baby's sex. Our hospital doesn't tell you the sex through ultrasound or bloodwork. So we wanted to find out this time (: ! We also went back at 37weeks and got to see his chubby face ! It was definitely amazing to see, and well worth it, but ours is done by medical professionals. But if money is an object and you need to save then I wouldn't do it.
  • We skipped it with my first daughter, and did the elective scan this time because it was fun to have our daughter there, she was excited to see her baby sister. I ended up having to reschedule 3x because baby was too small and too wiggly to get any good 3D pics, we are going back for the 3rd time next month. The place was awesome though, they only charged us once and let me keep rescheduling until we got images we are happy with.

  • Our sonographer told us frankly that the 3D ultrasounds aren't convered by insurance and that they really don't provide you much more than a standard ultrasound/sonogram. I won't be getting one, thanks to her honesty.

They don't provide any information because they're for entertainment purposes only. The tech won't tell you that it looks like something is wrong with the baby. They should call your doctor if they see something odd, but they're not there to make sure baby is developing properly, they're there so you can see baby.

  • I've seen photos from those and I can't tell at all what the baby looks like. I would skip it and save the $75 or splurge on something you will actually use for the baby like a nicer stroller or a housecleaner to come while you are in the hospital so you can come home and relax for that first week or two.
  • We're not going to. I want to save the surprise of what DD looks like for when she's born, and I've also heard that unnecessary ultrasounds are not the best idea health wise.
