5 Week Ultrasound.. 2 Sacs.. 1 Yolk Sac.. HELP! Follow up tomorrow!

I posted this on another discussion but received no replies so I'm hoping to get some insight here!

Hello ladies! First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to each of you! This is my first post and I have some questions, so I apologize in advance if it is a little overwhelming. I am twenty-eight years old and I have a ten year old son. My fiancé and I have been trying to conceive for 6 years. I have severe endometriosis and had laparoscopic surgery last year, in which they found a blocked tube and could not unblock it. Three months after the surgery, I was pregnant.

Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum and miscarried at 10 weeks. Since then, we have seen a fertility specialist and undergone one IUI which was unsuccessful. That was about four months ago. We went on a trip to Disney world the week before last and decided to discuss our options once we got home. We were either going to save up for IVF or I was going to have the laparoscopic surgery again. I was very nauseous the entire trip and my breasts were KILLING me. I chalked it up to being on my feet for 12 hours a day in the heat and riding rides.

My period was due that week but never came. Again, I chalked it up to my body reacting to me being so active the entire week and figured it would come a little late. By the time we got home, I was 2 or 3 days late and decided to take a test for the hell of it. 10 tests later, we had nothing but POSITIVES. Can you say, MIRACLE? That's definitely what it is. So, my fiancé has been very worried and didn't want to get his hopes up but I am just too excited and want to remain positive. We went to our first appointment yesterday and had an Ultrasound. According to my last period, I should be around 5 weeks and 3 days.

The ultrasound showed two gestational sacs with one yolk sac. My GYNO was called into emergency delivery so she sort of rushed me through explaining what she saw, which really irritated me. The U/S tech said that I have a slightly tilted uterus and the two sacs could either be twins, and one is developing slower than the other, or some type of blood filled sac, which is no threat to the baby. The doctor said for me to not even think about twins because she's almost positive it's a blood filled sac. She also said that the other sac which contains the yolk sac is not perfectly round which concerns her. I did my first beta yesterday and go back in 48 hours. I am also on 200mg of progesterone twice a day.

My next U/S is tomorrow (5 days since the last one) which will still only put me at 6 weeks and two days. My fiancé is worried that the healthier sac is abnormally shaped. Has anyone experienced any of these things? We most definitely want ONE healthy baby but would be ecstatic if there are two. It really upsets me that she didn't even discuss the possibility of twins. I have read plenty of forums where the twin just develops later, even after being diagnosed a bleed. Sorry this is so long. I don't want to leave anything out or stress myself out over it! Thanks in advance. :)

  • First off congratulations! I don't really have any experience with this, or sound advice to give, but I do hope that you can get some answers tomorrow. Good luck!

  • I also have no advice except that regardless of what the situation is, I would be very clear with my doctor about my opinion of her behavior at the previous appointment. Emergencies happen, but with your history she should have had you wait or transferred you to another physician in the practice to answer all of your questions or had you return the next day, not in 5 days. Here's hoping your appointment today goes better than the last! Congratulations!

  • Congrats! It's so cool you get to tie the magic of Disneyland into your family. The doctor will have a better view of what's going on now that you're a week older. I know this may sound generic but you and your fiancé need to write down ALL the questions you have. When you're in the office and nerves get going it is common to have important questions slip your mind. It'll help you gain some control over the appointment too.

  • I hope they'll be able to see the heat beat for you to put your mind at ease.  6 weeks is still sometimes early for some people. I saw mine at 6 w 4 d.  FX for you...good luck with the US!
  • No advice or information but FX that you have a healthy baby (or two) in there-you're probably a little too early for them to really see what's going on.

I have what they think is a small bleed next to the amniotic sac. I was spotting and went in at 5 weeks 3 days. They saw an amniotic sac and yolk. They are calling it a small fluid sac but since I was spotting, they are assuming that's where it came from. I go back Wednesday for my 6w1d sono. Try not to worry.
  • Hi there!

I can completely relate to you...I will find out on Thursday if I am really having twins or not... I know that the wait can be terrible and every second feels like an hour.  I will pray that you and your babies are happy and healthy !
  • Why does ur fiancé think one of the sacs is abnormally shaped? Did the doctor or US tech say that or is he just guessing?

Missed that, thanks. The reason I was asking is because It is normal for sac shapes to vary, however if it is truly an irregular shaped sac it could lead to problems. I would definitely demand another ultrasound. As far as the 2nd sac I would probably listen to what ur doc says.. If she says the second sac is blood filled, then it most likely is. A lot of women get those. Lastly, with her rushing u,I would absolutely say something at ur next visit. Especially since were given unsettling news, she should've taken the time to explain everything to u
  • It could possibly be a subchorionic hemorrhage, which is very common. Since it is so early I will say anything is possible. I have scanned many patients where it was just to early to clearly see anything and then the next week there's a fetal pole within the the gestational sac. FYI a retroverted uterus can cause no issues with pregnancies. I know the waiting game is so hard but just try and remain positive.
