Flying at 33 weeks?

I haven't seen my mom in over a year and my step dad is really insisting I go down to NC and see her. I'm from NY. I'm her only daughter, and my brother passed away 5 years ago so she's pretty depressed she's missing my pregnancy. I'll be 33 weeks by the time I fly down there. It's a 4 hour flight including a layover. It will be a surprise that I'm coming.

Re: Flying at 33 weeks?

  • Check with your doctor before booking. I just flew at 24 weeks and it was not comfortable. It was only a 2 hour flight. Depending on your pregnancy and symptoms you could be just fine.

  • My step dad booked it without actually telling me. So that's a problem right there, lol. I'm going to call my OB tomorrow and tell him.

I don't think that you would even be allowed on the flight, honestly. Can he exchange the ticket so she can come to you?
  • When I looked this info up on Southwest it said they advise not flying after 38 weeks. I will be flying at 30 weeks but its a quick 1 hour flight so I'm not too concerned. The rest is really at you and your doctor's discretion.

This seems very strange to me. Is there some reason mom can't come see you? Why inconvenience the pregnant lady?
  • Honestly I'd talk to your step dad and suggest returning the ticket and buying her one instead. This way she can experience more of your pregnancy than if you visited and you don't have the discomfort of a plane flight. She can see any progress you've made on the nursery, things you've purchased. Maybe you could even try to schedule one of your appointments for when she visits, this way she can hear the heartbeat
  • I would check with your doctor and make sure you feel comfortable with the (hopefully small) chance that you could end up staying in NC for the next few months in the event you went into labor early. Also if your doctor advises against it, you should probably check with your insurance--- sometimes if you don't follow your doctor's advice, your insurance won't cover your hospitalization.
  • I think youll be fine, although I am not a doctor. I am from a small town in alaska and pregnant women normally do not deliver there they fly to anchorage around 37 weeks to deliver. But that is only a one hour flight.
  • Contrary to what a pp has said, You can fly with a doctors certificate/note. I'm flying at 30/32 weeks so I've done a little research, provided I get the all clear from my doctor. They don't usually give you permission after 35 weeks, unless there are circumstances that would require you to fly. But between 26-35 weeks flying is okay with doctors permission. And if your pregnancy is going well and all is routine, and you are not high risk in anyway, your doctor should give you permission,

Thanks for all the answers, I really appreciate it. She had a heart attack in August and can't fly right now. They are driving up in January when the baby is born, so hopefully she'll be okay to not postpone that trip. My husbands nervous about me flying, Although I'm not. This pregnancy is by far the easiest. I didn't know I was pregnant at all until I went to the doctor at 8 weeks pregnant bc I had cramping. (I had a miscarriage prior and didn't get a period yet) I had no morning sickness, no symptoms at all besides being sore and hungry. Hopefully it will go well. My step dad did book priority on Southwest so I don't have to wait on line to board and he's having a member of the airport pick me up with a golf cart at Baltimore so I don't have to walk to my plane change that's across the whole entire airport.
  • I asked and was told I could fly until 36 weeks. I'm taking a 2.5 hour flight at 30 weeks and I'll have an 18 months old lap infant...so that'll be a blast. At least it's short.

Consider getting compression stockings. Also definitely talk to your care provider first.

I am in Hong Kong right now, I have travelled 18 hours to get here and whilst here I'm travelling 3 hours to Thailand and back before I go home. I was 24 weeks on flight over and will be 26 on flight back. So granted not as far as you will be but the only issue I had was my aching back which aches whether I am sat at home, lying in bed or on a plane. I didn't get compression socks and only got up to move around once or twice on both flights. It was fine! A one hour flight is hardly anything, take a book and you'll be there with your mum before you know it! x

Edit: Just realised you have a 4 hour flight! Will still be fine ;)
