Newborn inserts

Hello! I just had my shower over the weekend so I'm trying to get everything organized and figure out what I still need before LO arrives... I was lucky enough to get a car seat and am going to purchase a mamaroo... My question is, are newborn inserts really necessary for either one? I'm thinking baby will be pretty snug in his car seat with or without one. How long would he possibly use it?

  • Based on what I have heard in the past, you are not supposed to add anything to the car seat. General rule: If it did not come with the car seat, then don't add it. Boith of my daughters were born at 36 weeks and had to pass a 2 hour car seat test in the hospital before they would let them come home in order to make sure they could still breathe properly. All of the nurses told me that we could not add anything to the seat and we should not use the supports that go around and over the top of their heads because it can push their head down and restrict their airway. Yet another reason why I love my Chicco becasue it only has head support on the sides and not on top.
  • Anything that you add to a car seat is not recommended because that means it was not crash tested with the additional item and they can't verify the safety of your baby. If the car seat is rated for your baby's weight you should be good to go
  • With a swing or seat with insert, I loved using our infant insert with our portable swing when my daughter was a newborn. She seemed so much more supported, and it was great putting her in the little swing when I was taking a shower. I agree with other people- don't add anything to the car seat. My infant car seat comes with an insert....
  • Good thread. I did not know about the inserts in car seats.
    *removes insert from registry

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • We used an additional insert with DD because she was tiny despite being full term and her head would slump to the side without it.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I've been looking to buy the inserts so this is a good question. My son was almost 8lbs and my daughter 6lbs & both there heads would have been flopping around without the insert. Im going to have to look into this now:)
  • It may depend on where you are but I read that once the insert is approved for your make of car seat it has been tested and baby is safe. Most of the examples given were the makers own insert, rather than universal inserts that are designed and tested for many seats.
  • We got the mamaroo insert as a gift, so we'll use it. I have no idea if it'll be necessary. Make sure as well if you use an ergo carrier that you either need the newborn insert or a folded blanket under baby's butt so it fits safely.
  • I've read that if you're concerned about their head flopping from side to side in the car seat, you can roll up receiving blankets and put them on either side of their head. Since it doesn't interfere with the seat belt, it's safe to use.

This is exactly what the nurses did for both of my daughters because they were little (5lb4oz and 4lb11oz) when we brought them home. I don't think they would have done it if it was not safe.
  • Great thread-had no idea! Thank you!
  • I have read that if the inserts are made by the same company as the car seat, and your model is listed, they have been tested. However, do some further research, as I'm not sure if that's accurate or not. I've also heard that the receiving blankets rolled up to the sides are good, so there's another option to consider!
